Fly Ash

DESCRIPTION
Fly Ash is by-product of pulverized coal, a mineral rich oxide from silica, aluminium and iron
that demonstrates very fine spherical particle shape and pozzolanic properties in concrete,
which improves compaction, stimulating early strength and improving pore structure.
When mixed with water and lime, it forms a stable cementitious compound which results to
long term strength and exceptional durability.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
Utilising the properties of Fly Ash makes it particularly advantageous for the following
applications in cement, concrete and construction industries:
• The manufacture of high-performance fly ash-blended cements
• Ready mix and Precast concrete (particularly suited for self-compacting concrete)
• Marine environments
CHEMICAL PROPERTIES • Mass concrete sections including roller compacted concrete (RCC)
Content (%) • Chloride and Sulphate bearing environments
Silica (SiO2) % 48-53 • Water-retaining structures
Alumina (Al2O3) 16-20 • Concrete masonry
Ferric Oxide (Fe2O3) 09-13 • Wet-sprayed concrete i.e., shotcrete
Calcium Oxide (CaO) 07-10
Magnesium Oxide (Mgo) 03-06 ADVANTAGES
Titanium dioxide (Tio2) 0.5-1.5 • Cost effective
Sodium Oxide (Na2O) 1.0-2.0 • Reduced water content of concrete mix improves long-term strength performance
Potassium Superoxide(K2O) 0.5-1.5 and durability
Sulphur Tri Oxide (SO3) 0.3-0.8 • Reduces permeability which relatively reduce shrinkage, creep and provides
Loss of Ignition 0.25-0.75 greater resistance to chloride ingress and sulphate attack
• Minimises the risk of alkali silica reaction
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES • Reduces temperature rise in thick sections i.e., heat of hydration
• Reduced rate of bleeding and compactibility that provides better pumping

Fly Ash is not considered to be hazardous to health, however, it should be handled in
Moisture Content (%) 0.07-0.10 accordance with good occupational hygiene and safety practices. High concentration of
Bulk Density 1.0-1.5 dust may cause irritation. Please refer to safety data sheets for more information.
