Q. WHAT ARE THE REASONS FOR MAINTAINING/MANAGING A GOOD STANDARD OF HEALTH AND
SAFETY AT THE WORKPLACE?

ANS: FOLLOWING ARE THE REASONS FOR MAINTAINING GOOD STANDARD OF HEALTH AND SAFETY AT
THE WORKPLACE….

MORAL:

 Duty of care: the employer owes a “duty of care.” Towards an employee’s health and safety by
providing safe and healthy working conditions to protect them from getting harmed and ill
health, on humanitarian grounds.
 Ethical and responsible behavior: it is unethical and irresponsible behavior to put someone in
danger when they come to work at the workplace that’s why organization should provide safe
and healthy working environment to protect them from harm.
 Pain and suffering: if the accident happens it is not only the injured who suffer from pain but
also his family, friends, colleagues, relatives will suffer because of financial dependency and
emotional attachment.
 Societal expectations: society expects from the organization that if someone goes work, they
should return money/wages/salary not the injuries and ill health, that’s why organization must
maintain a good standard of health and safety at the workplace.
 Trust Deficit: if there are a high number of accident in the organization then the workers morale
will get drastically decreased towards the organization thus resulting into high staff turnover
(attrition rate), high absenteeism rate, and loss of production.

LEGAL: Every country has health and safety laws under which every organization must operate their
business. If the organization does not comply with the legal requirements, then there will be legal
actions from the enforcement body e.g.

FORMAL ENFORCEMENT ACTION:

- Improvement notice: if the organization does not comply with the health and safety standards
the enforcement body/labor inspection will issue the improvement notice (with timescale/target
date) to improve the health and safety standard at the workplace. An improvement notice will
be issued without stopping the activity.
- Prohibition notice: If the organization does not comply with the improvement notice the labor
inspector will stop the activity and will issue the prohibition notice (with the timescale).

CRIMINAL PROCECUTION:

- LEGAL FINES
- REMEDIAL ORDERS
- PUNITIVE PENALTIES (HUGE PENALTIES)
- IMPRISONMENT TO THE MOST ACCOUNTABLE AND RESPONSIBLE PERSON FOR THE ACCIDENT.
- BUSINESS LICENSE MAY GET SUSPENDED/BANNED
- BUSINESS LECENSE MAY GET CANCELED BY THE COURT ORDER.
- CIVIL CLAIM

FINANCIAL: Due to the poor health and safety standards and poor commitment from the management,
accidents will occur. And accidents always result in losses in terms of Direct and Indirect Cost e.g.

Direct Cost: the cost which is easy to calculate or measure after the accident is called direct cost.

- Hospitalization cost
- First treatment cost
- Sick pay cost
- Legal fines
- Compensation given to the injured person costs.
- Property damaged cost
- Raw material damage cost
- Plant and equipment damage costs.
- Damage repairing cost.
- Etc.

Indirect Cost: the cost which is difficult to calculate or measure after the accident, usually it arises
indirectly after the accident.

- Reputation damage
- Goodwill damage into the eyes of the client and customers
- Productive time consumed in accident investigation.
- Overtime given to cover the production loss due to accident.
- Serving the legal notice cost
- Standby workers and machinery due to strike caused by accident.
- Recruiting new or replacement worker’s cost
- Training provided to the new or replacement.
- Litigation cost (legal fighting in the court)

Insured cost: the cost which can be recovered from the insurance company/agency is called insured
cost.

- Medical expenses
- Compensation claim
- Property damage due to the fire

Uninsured cost: the cost which cannot be recovered from the insurance company/agency is called
uninsured cost.

- Reputation damage
- Sick pay
- Legal fines
- Goodwill damage in the eyes of client and customers
- Litigation cost
- Serving the legal notice

Note: the indirect costs are 8 to 36 times greater than the direct costs.
