ANDEAN CONDOR
Currently, the Andean condor faces threats from habitat loss and
poaching. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these majestic
birds and their habitats. The Public Investment Project: “Improvement
of the recovery service of the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) in
Peru” has an investment cost of S/ 8,560,769.00. Due to their wide
distribution, they help maintain the balance of various ecosystems,
ensuring the conservation of diverse species. As a scavenger, the
Andean condor removes organic remains from the ecosystem, which
can become infection sources, keeping diseases and insect
proliferation under control.
In the past, the Andean condor was more abundant in the Andes.
However, due to hunting and environmental changes, their numbers
have significantly declined. They used to be more common, but illegal
hunting for use in traditional festivals and the sale of their feathers
and parts has greatly reduced their population. Additionally,
poisoning and habitat degradation have further threatened their
survival.
The Andean condor is one of the largest flying birds in the world. It
is larger than most other vultures and has a wingspan that rivals that
of the largest eagles. Its importance in the Andean people's worldview
makes it more significant than many other birds.
