ANDEAN CONDOR

The Andean Condor, known scientifically as Vultur Gryphus, lives in

the Andes mountains of Peru. It is a large bird with a wingspan of up
to 3 meters. The condor primarily feeds on carrion. They can weigh
up to 15 kilograms and live for about 50 years. Condors contribute to
the health of ecosystems and the sustainable development of the
country, particularly in environmental, economic, and social aspects.
They help promote productive activities such as ecotourism, which
supports the economy and development of local populations and the
country.

Currently, the Andean condor faces threats from habitat loss and
poaching. Conservation efforts are underway to protect these majestic
birds and their habitats. The Public Investment Project: “Improvement
of the recovery service of the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) in
Peru” has an investment cost of S/ 8,560,769.00. Due to their wide
distribution, they help maintain the balance of various ecosystems,
ensuring the conservation of diverse species. As a scavenger, the
Andean condor removes organic remains from the ecosystem, which
can become infection sources, keeping diseases and insect
proliferation under control.
In the past, the Andean condor was more abundant in the Andes.
However, due to hunting and environmental changes, their numbers
have significantly declined. They used to be more common, but illegal
hunting for use in traditional festivals and the sale of their feathers
and parts has greatly reduced their population. Additionally,
poisoning and habitat degradation have further threatened their
survival.

The Andean condor is a magnificent and impressive bird. It has black

feathers with white markings and a bald head. Despite its large size,
the condor is a graceful flyer. It is a very well-known, popular, and
charismatic species. Its conservation can attract resources to protect
other less-known species (flagship species).

The Andean condor is one of the largest flying birds in the world. It
is larger than most other vultures and has a wingspan that rivals that
of the largest eagles. Its importance in the Andean people's worldview
makes it more significant than many other birds.

The Andean condor is found in the mountainous regions of Peru. It

often roosts on high cliffs and rocky outcrops, where it has a good
vantage point for spotting food. In Peru, the Andean condor is
classified as an endangered species. Internationally, it is protected by
the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild
Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the Convention on the Conservation of
Migratory Species (CMS), of which Peru is a part.
