Total Reward
‘Total reward encompasses all aspects of work that are valued
by employees,… in addition to the wider pay and benefits
package.’ (CIPD, 2015)
Comprises:
Financial rewards (Extrinsic rewards)

direct indirect

Non-financial rewards (Intrinsic rewards)

Types of Reward – Financial

• Direct (Pay)
1. Basic pay – guaranteed payment usually
determined on a time basis -hourly, monthly or
annual
2. Variable pay – contingent upon performance of the
individual, group or organisation. Not guaranteed or
permanent.
• Indirect (Benefits) - ‘Perks’ such as
• Company cars
• Private health care insurance
• Discounts on goods & services
Types of Reward –
Non-Financial
 Job security
 Flexible Work Hours
 Working condition
 Work/ Life Balance
 Feedback and recognition
 Training opportunities
 Career development
 Employee discounts
Reward and Motivation
• Recruit…select…effort…performance…reward…retain
• But choice about level and persistence of effort!
• Motivation is an internal drive
• Managers cannot ‘motivate’ employees but help to create and
sustain conditions where employees may be more (or less)
motivated.

• Reward can contribute (or not) to this.

Intrinsic Motivation
• “Intrinsic motivation refers to behavior that is driven by internal
rewards. In other words, the motivation to engage in a behavior
arises from within the individual because it is intrinsically
rewarding.”

• Intrinsic motivation - related to ‘psychological’ rewards such as

the opportunity to use one’s ability, a sense of challenge or
achievement, receiving appreciation or recognition.
