WEEKLY TEST CLASS XII CHEMISTRY MM= 20 TIME= 60 minutes

Q1. Answer the following questions (2 x 4= 8)

a) When dehydrated fruits and vegetables are placed in water, they slowly swell and return to
original form. Why? Would temperature affect this process? Justify your answer.
b) With proper justification briefly explain the type of deviation from the Raoult’s law expected for a
mixture of:
a. Nitric acid and water
b. Chloroform and ethanol.
c) Explain why on addition of 1 mol of NaCl to 1 litre of water, the boiling point of water increases
while addition of 1 mol of ethanol to 1 litre of water decreases the boiling point.
d) On mixing liquid X and Y, the volume of the resulting solution increases. What type of deviation
from Raoult’s law is shown by the resulting solution? Also comment on the enthalpy change for
this solution.
Q2. Solve the following: (3 x 4= 12)
a) Calculate the mass of NaCl (Molar mass= 58.5 gmol-1) to be dissolved in 37.2g of water to lower
the freezing point by 2 oC, assuming that NaCl undergoes complete dissociation. (Kf for water=
1.86 Kkgmol-1).
b) A solution is prepared by dissolving 10 g of non-volatile solute in 200 g of water. It has a vapour
pressure of 31.84 mm Hg at 308K. Calculate the molar mass of the solute. (Vapour pressure of
pure water at 308K= 32 mm Hg)
c) Some ethylene glycol (OHCH2CH2OH) is added to your car’s cooling system along with 5 Kg of
water. If the freezing point of water glycol system is -15 oC, what is the boiling point of the
solution, (Kb= 0.52 Kkgmol-1, and Kf= 1.86 Kkgmol-1 for H2O)
d) Determine the osmotic pressure of a solution prepared by dissolving 2.5 x 10 -2g of K2SO4 in 2 L
of water at 25 oC, assuming that it is completely dissociated. (R= 0.0821 L atm K -1mol-1, Molar
mass of K2SO4= 174 gmol-1)
