Pink Shirt Day TEXT SET:
A
STAND UP TO BULLYING

Name: Date:

In 2007, something remarkable happened in Berwick, Nova Scotia. A new Grade 9 student
at the local school was being treated unkindly because he wore a pink shirt. But, two
courageous students in Grade 12, named David Shepherd and Travis Price decided to take a
stand against bullying.
These two students went out and bought 50 pink shirts. They then encouraged their
classmates to join them in wearing pink as a symbol of unity and support. The next day,
something incredible happened - most of the students arrived at school wearing pink shirts!
This simple act of kindness gave birth to what is now known as Pink Shirt Day.
The impact of the Berwick event was so significant that Nova Scotia officially declared the
second Thursday of September as "Stand Up Against Bullying Day." This was just the
beginning.
In 2008, the province of British Columbia in Canada proclaimed February 28th as their
official provincial anti-bullying day. The movement gained momentum and reached even
greater heights.
In 2012, the United Nations declared May 4th as Anti-Bullying Day. This marked a global
recognition of the importance of standing against bullying.
Today, Canada celebrates Pink Shirt Day on the last Wednesday of February as its national
Pink Shirt/Anti-Bullying Day. Many other countries have also set aside specific days to raise
awareness about bullying prevention, kindness, and inclusion.
The message of Pink Shirt Day has reached students across Canada, from kindergarten all
the way to high school graduation. It serves as a reminder to be kind and inclusive, and it
continues to inspire more people to join the movement against bullying.
Let us stand together and make every day a Pink Shirt Day, where bullying has no place
and kindness prevails.
