MWD Dynamic Sequencing
Equipment Required

Equipment Required
To utilize the MWD Dynamic Sequencing and Surveying feature, you must have the following
equipment, firmware, and software:
 Bench Tree MWD Receiver (BTR-C/C/W) with firmware version 1.09.10a or higher.
 Bench Tree MWD Software Suite version 1.06a or higher.
 Bench Tree DPU2 Processor firmware version 1.52 or higher.

Disable Dynamic Sequencing, Dynamic Survey, Instantaneous Dynamic

Sequencing, and Resync at the end of the run, if you are using the same tool (DPU2)
Note with a non-Bench Tree system or Bench Tree software earlier than 1.06a.
If you enable Dynamic Sequencing, make sure that the RPM file in memory access
is open before programming the tool so that the processor will record data.

MWD Dynamic Sequencing Features

(Covered by U.S. Patent No. 9,062,537, other patents pending)
The MWD Dynamic Sequencing feature allows transmission of different logging sequences for rotating
than it does for non-rotating. It supports Bench Tree’s patented Instantaneous Dynamic Sequencing
that instantly switches modes when the rotation state changes. However, MWD Dynamic Sequencing
also supports legacy dynamic sequencing, which switches rotation modes at the end of the current
logging sequence.
MWD Dynamic Sequencing and Dynamic Surveying include the following features:
 DYNAMIC SEQUENCING (DySq)
Enables the processor to recognize rotating and non-rotating modes. This can provide more regular
toolfaces when the tool is sliding and higher density gamma counts when the tool is rotating.
 INSTANTANEOUS DYNAMIC SEQUENCING (IDSq)
Covered by U.S. Patent No. 9,062,537, other patents pending.
Enables the processor to instantly change between tool logging sequence modes, depending on the
RPM state (rotating and non-rotating), while drilling. IDSq requires DySq to be enabled. With the
pumps on, a change in the sequence (rotating to non-rotating or non-rotating to rotating) will cause
the tool to cease data transmission (pulsing) for the Transmit Delay Time (TxDT), and transmit
the sync sequence followed by the appropriate toolface logging sequence or survey sequence.
The two T/L sequence examples listed below represent the suggested method to use when
determining the sequences for the two different modes)
Example1: T/L Sequence 1 is selected in the top window (see Figure 9) to be the data string
transmitted when the toolstring (MWD) is non-rotating (sliding).
Example2: T/L Sequence 2 is selected in the top window (see Figure 9) to be the data string
transmitted when the toolstring (MWD) is rotating (drilling).
This feature is available only with the Bench Tree DPU2 processor with Firmware
Note
version 1.47 or higher.

MWD Dynamic Sequencing
MWD Dynamic Sequencing Features

 DYNAMIC SURVEYING (DySu)

Enables the processor to transmit a survey through the use of rotating and non-rotating events. This
is an alternate downlink method used in difficult borehole conditions, such as high-loss circulation
situations.

This feature is available only with the Bench Tree DPU2 processor with Firmware
Note
version 1.47 or higher.

 RESYNC
Feature that enables the tool to send new sync pulses before every tool logging sequence. The tool
logging sequence must complete the entire sequence before Resync starts so that the processor can
change between toolface logging sequence modes.

The Resync feature is currently not supported when using Instantaneous Dynamic
Note
Sequencing (IDSq).

 NON-ROTATING SEQUENCE NUMBER (NRSq)

Enables the processor to transmit the specified logging sequence number when the tool is in a non-
rotating state.
 ROTATING SEQUENCE NUMBER (UGSq/NGSq)
Enables the processor to command and transmit the specified logging sequence number when the
tool is in a rotating state.
 ROTATING RATE THRESHOLD (RoRT)
The RPM value that determines whether the BHA is rotating or non-rotating.
 ROTATING UPDATE TIME (RoUT)
The amount of time the BHA must be above or below RoRT to switch modes.
 ROTATION STATE CHANGE DELAY TIME (RSDT)
The amount of time (flat line) between tool logging sequence modes.
 ROTATION RATE RECORD THRESHOLD (RRRT)
The rpm value that determines when rpm’s are stored in memory.
 ROTATION SENSOR TYPE
Allows choosing between different means of rotation detection. “Automatic” allows tool to choose
based on drilling conditions. (Recommended)

Dynamic Sequencing Configuration

Dynamic Sequencing Configuration

This section provides the settings for Dynamic Sequencing Control, Instantaneous Dynamic
Sequencing Control, Resync, and Dynamic Survey Sequencing Control.
Covered by U.S. Patent No. 9,062,537, other patents pending.

Dynamic Sequencing Control (DySq)

Enabling DySq provides you with two tool logging sequences, one for non-rotation (NRSq) and the
other for rotation (UGSq).
1. Open the MWD Configuration Utility, your screen should look similar to the one shown in
Figure 1.

9. Select Resync for resync style dynamic sequencing or Instantaneous for instantaneous style
dynamic sequencing.
 Selecting Instantaneous sets the IDSq variable to Enable. Upon rotation changes, the
processor stops telemetry for the TxDT period. Then automatically starts telemetry with sync
again which is followed by the appropriate Toolface Logging Sequence.
 Selecting Resync sets the Resync variable to On. This triggers the tool to resync before each

Dynamic Survey Sequencing Control (DySu)

This feature enables the acquisition and telemetry of surveys to be triggered by the rotation of the BHA,
without having to cycle the pumps, and provides an alternative survey method in difficult borehole
conditions, such as severe loss of circulation situations.
You should only enable Dynamic Survey Sequencing Control (DySu) if you know ahead of time that
there will be severe loss of circulation. A survey is taken when a switch from rotating to non-rotating
takes place; the survey is then transmitted during the current non-rotating state, or the following
rotating state, depending on your configuration.
13. Click the Arrow and select Enable, as shown in Figure 13.

Rotating Rate Threshold (RoRT)

Before you set the RPM threshold, ask the directional driller or other knowledgeable
personnel what the lowest RPM is going to be for drilling. Make sure the directional
Important!
driller is aware that you cannot set the RPM threshold below 10 RPM. For
recommended Rotating Rate Threshold values, refer to Table 1.

Figure 13 on the previous page shows the Rotating Rate Threshold is set to 15 RPM, therefore the
directional driller cannot drill below 30 RPM. If the directional driller decides to drill with 20 RPM, the
tool could randomly switch the tool logging sequence from rotating to non-rotating, because the actual
RPM downhole would be less than 20 RPM, due to torquing and untorquing of the toolstring. Refer to
Table 1 for the recommended Rotating Rate Threshold (RoRT).
1. Select a value between 10 and 30 RPM threshold. The tool will switch modes based on the set
threshold.
Example:
Figure 13 on the previous page shows the Rotating Rate Threshold (RoRT) is set to 15 RPM. 0–
15 RPM indicates that the tool is sliding and 16–200 RPM indicates the tool is rotating. (Applies to
Instantaneous Dynamic Sequencing (IDSq) or Resync.

toolstring.
The downhole rotation (RPMs) is recorded on the Bench Tree processor 1.52 in the
Note RPMC log. Only RPM values above the Rotation Rate Record threshold are
recorded to the memory log.

Frequently asked questions

Question Answer

How can I determine if I can run All three listed below have to be satisfied
dynamic sequencing features? 1. MWD Config > Help > About > should be 1.06a and
the Receiver Version should be 1.09.10a or higher.
2. Mwd config > Tool > Diagnostic Tests (see under
versions for processor version v.1.52 or higher).
3. BTR Interface > Help > About > should be 1.05a and
the Receiver Version should be 1.09.10a or higher.
Why should I enable dynamic If you plan to switch from rotating to sliding and prefer
sequencing features? two different logging sequences, then the advantage to this
is getting more toolfaces during sliding with fewer gamma
counts and having more gamma counts while rotating. This
will assist the Directional Driller when sliding and assist
the MWD hand/Geologist with more gamma counts hence,
gamma curves with more gamma points during rotating.
How should I determine if I should If the RPMs of the BHA are above 10, then you should be
enable dynamic sequencing features? safe enabling dynamic features. If it is less, then you could
unintentionally switch modes, which will delay the
expected telemetry.
How long does it take to switch the This can be configured to be as low as 15 seconds for
Tool Logging Sequence from non- Instantaneous Dynamic Sequencing. When using Resync
rotating to rotating OR vice versa? Dynamic Sequencing, the entire logging sequence must
complete before making the switch.
Can I run the Dynamic Sequencing Yes, once Dynamic Sequence is enabled you will be
feature with GE processors that are prompted to choose Resync or Instantaneous (see
capable of rotation detection? Figure 8 on page 7). If you are running a GE processor that
is capable of rotation detection, then you should choose
Resync. Note that this feature does not work like
Instantaneous. If you are rotating, the tool logging
sequence will not switch until the non-rotating tool logging
sequence finishes the transmission. If the tool is still
rotating, then it will go into rotating logging sequence.

MWD Dynamic Sequencing
Frequently asked questions

Question Answer

When should I enable dynamic survey? If you believe that you have loss of circulation issues and it
would be difficult to obtain a survey, then you should
enable Dynamic Survey. Keep in mind a survey will be
pulsed up first before the tool logging sequence during
rotating or sliding, depending on your configuration. We
recommend that you leave Dynamic Survey OFF, unless
the loss of circulation is severe.
Should I have more than one You only need one configuration file, if the following
configuration file for the curve and applies:
lateral section? 1. The BHA will be the same for the lateral and the curve.
2. The lowest RPM in the curve and in the lateral will be
15 and greater.
Otherwise, you might need two configurations or may
need to modify the current configuration to change a few
parameters for optimal operation in the current section.
