CHAPTER 15
• SOUTH AFRICAN HERITAGE BODIES
What this chapter is all about:
1. Who is SAHRA – South African Heritage Resources Agency.

2. Understand that heritage is something precious and own to our country.

Therefore it needs to be preserved and protected. Imagine every tourist wants to
touch and take a pièce home of the things they visit in South Africa. We will have
nothing left! Because of this reason, special permits are needed before anybody
can work on or change anything that is classified as heritage.

3. There are six types of heritage that you must please study and must be able to
give me examples of each.
Definitions:
National property – All national and some provincial
cultural heritage sites of exceptional quality.

Cultural meaning/value – The value from generation

to generation.

Provincial heritage site – A site that has been

declared heritage by the provincial authorities.

National heritage site – A site that has been declared

national heritage by SAHRA – Management and
protection of that site is the responsibility of SAHRA.

Natural heritage – This includes national parks and

the responsibility of SANparks to manage and
protect them.
