INTRODUCTION

The works of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907 – 1954) revolve around her biography and her
own suffering. Throughout her journey as a painter, she was the author of 150 works, mainly self-
portraits, in which she projected her difficulties in surviving.

In her youth she suffered a serious accident that would leave her marked for life, spending the
best years of her life bedridden. However, that did not prevent her from becoming a great
Mexican painter and being able to reflect all her feelings through her. In addition, this accident
would not close the doors of her heart and it did not prevent her from falling in love and getting
married.

The work of art that I am going to talk about is entitled "The two Frida’s" is a double self-portrait
painted in oil and finished in 1939. In it you can see two images of the artist. Both are sitting on a
bench and are holding hands. The Frida on the right side is dressed in a simple Tehuano-style
Mexican dress, and the Frida on the left side wears a white European-style dress.

What Frida wanted to express through this work of art was her feelings after her divorce with her
husband Diego of her, she Painted a Mexican Frida, with whom Diego fell in love with her. The
other European Frida, the new independent artist recognized throughout the world, but also the
one that her husband abandoned. You can see in this work of art their exposed hearts and a vein
that unites them, the Victorian Frida cuts that vein, implying her breakup with her husband, and
the other Frida holds her hand, implying that at the end of the day the only thing that we have
ourselves

I chose this work of art because it teaches us to be independent and to fend for ourselves, to bring
out the best in ourselves in the face of sadness. This work brings empowerment to my life and to
understand that one is the only person who understands, loves and helps each other to get ahead
