Title:

Permanent markers are produced using a range of alcohol soluble dyes. A student claims
that four permanent markers of different brands of the same colour contain the same dyes.
Propose a hypothesis to explain this observation. Plan and design an experiment to test
your hypothesis.

Hypothesis: Four permanent markers of different brands of identical colours may contain
the same dye in their ink.
Aim: Using paper chromatography, to see if four different brands of permanent markers
have the same dyes in their inks.
Apparatus and Materials: Alcohol, scissors, ruler, beakers, filter paper, four different
brands of permanent markers.

Diagram:
Procedure:
1. Fill 1 beaker with 30ml alcohol.
2. Cut rectangular strip of paper.
3. Place a dot 1cm from the end of the paper with a marker.
4. Using the alcohol, partially soak the tip of the filter paper closest to the ink spot in
the beaker.
5. Record observations.
6. Allow filter paper to dry.
7. Repeat the procedure with the remaining three markers, making sure that each dot
is the same size.
8. Tabulate results and calculate the retention factor of each of the markers.

Variables: Manipulated- different brands of marker

Controlled- Size of dots and volume of alcohol
Dependent- retention factor

Data to be collected: Retention factor of the markers.

Treatment of data: Assumption- The four brand contain the same type of dye.
Limitation-
Precaution- Make sure all markers work properly and be careful when
immersing the tip of the filter paper.
