Charles Dickens, the best loved and most widely read of English novelists, was born into a
lower-middle-class family at Portsea on February 7, 1812. His father, who later appears as Mr.
Micawber in David Copperfield, was an ineffectual naval clerk whose fortunes continually
fluctuated. When Charles was nine years old, the family fortunes took a catastrophic turn for the
worse. Dickens’ father was imprisoned in the Marshalsea debtor’s prison, and the boy suffered the
humiliation of working in a London blacking factory pasting labels on bottles in full view of
passers-by.
These early experiences left an indelible mark on the sensitive ambitious boy and shaped much of
the fiction he was later to write. An improvement in the Dickens’ fortunes enabled the boy to
continue his interrupted schooling.
In 1835 he became a parliamentary reporter for a newspaper and began to contribute sketches of
London life which were published in 1836 as Sketches by Boz ( Dickens’ early pen name). It was

children, was apparently a rather dull, unimaginative woman. The unhappy marriage ended in a

Pickwick was followed by Oliver Twist (1838)and Nicholas Nickleby (1839), both of which
solidified Dickens’ reputation to such an extent that when he visited the United States in 1842 in
