G35L GPS Data Logger
1. Introduction
The G35L GPS data logger is a high performance GPS recorder and vehicle tracking system for passive
tracking applications. The G35L can be used as a passive GPS receiver while it simultaneously logs the
position data to its on-board flash memory. The logging interval is user definable either by time from 1
to 65535 seconds or by distance from 1 to 65535 meters.
The G35L supports data download through RS-232, USB, and optional Bluetooth interfaces. When a
Bluetooth dongle is used, the G35L supplies DC 4.5V power to the Bluetooth dongle.
The G35L can satisfy a wide variety of applications for vehicle navigation, security tracking, fleet
management, map making, or leisure purposes. In automotive applications, the SiRF architecture
supports advanced tracking capabilities through fast recovery times combined with reliable operation in
“urban” environments and areas of dense foliage. The G35L is ideal for commercial and professional
applications such as precision agriculture, geographic information systems (GIS), and mapping.
The G35L allows for a wide range of power supplies such as a vehicle battery or standard USB
interface.

2. Software Installation
2.1 Install G35L USB Driver
Installation Steps
Step 1: Put G35L Driver & Tools CD into the CDROM of your PC. Make sure that G35L is not
connected to the PC through USB cable at this moment.
Step 2: Under directory /USB Driver, double click “CP210x_VCP_Win2K_XP_S2K3.exe”, and then
follow its instructions to finish the pre-installation process.
Step 3: After the pre-installation above finished, connect G35L and PC through G35L USB cable.

G35L GPS Data Logger
After USB cable connected, the “power” LED on G35L front panel should be on; meanwhile on the
screen there is message window “Found new hardware” and “Found New hardware Wizard” present.
Step5: Follow the instructions on the screen and leave everything as default, finish the remaining
installation.
Finally, a message window will present on the bottom of screen: “Your new hardware is installed and
ready to use”. Up to now G35L USB driver is installed successfully.
NOTE:
After Step 5 finished, some computers may still indicate “find new hardware” and pop up “Found
New hardware Wizard” window again as in Step 3. In this case, please redo Step 3 to Step 5 to finish
installation.
Step 6: Review COM port number. After G35L USB driver is installed successfully, G35L USB is
mapped as a virtual COM port, which can be reviewed at “Control
PanelÆSystemÆHardwareÆDevice ManagerÆPorts (COM & LPT)”:
This virtual COM port number is needed when running Data Logger download and configuration utility.
NOTE:
1. The virtual COM port number may be different depending on the configuration of PCs.
2. When G35L USB cable is unplugged, the virtual COM will disappear on the above window. It
presents automatically when G35L is connected to PC through USB cable.
Caution:
Over-voltage power supply may damage the device.
While G35L logging data, the “LOG” LED on the front panel keeps on flashing. When “LOG” LED be
solid ON, that indicate logging memory is full and data logging stopped.
If “LOG” LED stays OFF, it indicates that data logging requirements are not satisfied with its specific
logging mode.
As mentioned at (2.2), copy the file “G35L Utility.exe” from Data Logger Driver&Tools CD to your
PC. Suppose you build a directory as C:/G35L and save the utility file under C:/G35L/.
Connection Steps
Step1: Select COM port
If G35L is connected to PC through USB interface, then select USB virtual COM port. USB virtual
COM port number can be found at “Control PanelÆSystemÆHardwareÆDevice
ManagerÆPorts(COM & LPT)”, please refer to (2.1 Step 6) for more details.
If G35L is connected to PC through RS232 interface, then select corresponding RS232 port.
NOTE:
When both USB and RS232 interface are applied, only RS232 COM port should be selected for
G35L utility. In this case, G35L can be powered through USB as normal, but can not
communicate with PC through USB cable.
Step 2: Select baud rate
Select the baud rate of G35L. G35 is set to 4800 baud rate by default.
NOTES:
1. G35 is set to 4800 baud rate by default.
2. The connection will be failed if G35L baud rate mismatch the selected baud rate. Users must
remember what G35L baud rate is after G35L baud rate is re-configured.
Step 3: Input password
Laipac Technology, Inc. | www.laipac.com | Tel: 1-(905)762-1228 Fax: 1-(905)763-1737 10
G35L GPS Data Logger
NOTE:
There is no password for G35L by default, so there is no need to input password if you never set it.
Step 4: Click button “Connect”. If COM port number, baud rate and password are correct, there are
messages “Logging…”, then “Login Ok”, then “Device connected” on the bottom of the utility window.
NOTES:
In the following are possible failure messages on the bottom of utility window after click “Connect”
button:
1. “Open port error”
This message indicates wrong COM port number being selected, or no cable connection. Please
check your COM port number at “Control PanelÆSystemÆHardwareÆDevice ManagerÆPorts
(COM & LPT)”, and check your cable connection.
2. “Failed to connect the device”, then “Device disconnect”.
It indicates the COM port selection is correct, but bard rate selection is wrong.
3. “login failed, change password and try connection again”
Input wrong password.
Caution:
If one existed file is selected, it will be overwritten by new data. It the file does not exist, it will be
created automatically.
Step 2: Click button “Download” to start the download. Download data operation does not remove the
logged data from G35L.
Clear Data
Click button “Clear” to clear the logged data.
NOTES:
1. It is highly recommended to download data with baud rate 115200. Download data at baud rate
4800 is very slowly. Please refer to (5.3) about how to configure baud rate.
2. While G35L utility is running and connected, GPS data logging process is stopped.
Caution:
If you set password and forget it, you have to provide detailed device information to Laipac for
help. No super password exists for the sake of security, and restoring the password involves
complicate calculation. So be careful with your password!
• Log Mode
User can set the following data logging mode according to specific applications:
0: fix with time interval: G35L logs data with time interval after GPS fixed.
1: time interval: G35L logs data with time interval, no matter GPS fixed or not.
2: fix with distance interval: G35L logs data with distance interval after GPS fixed.
3: fix with time or distance interval: When GPS fixed, G35L logs data at every time internal and
every distance interval.
4: fix with time and distance interval: When GPS fixed, G35L logs data when both time internal
and distance interval are reached.
• Logged by Time
Set logging time interval, from 1 to 65535 seconds.
• Logged by Distance
Set logging distance interval, from 1 to 65535 meters.
• NMEA Baud
Set G35L communication baud rate, from 4800 bps to 115200bps.
After setup above items, click button “Save setting” to save all settings.
NOTE:
When NMEA Baud is changed and saved, it does not take active until you exit or disconnect the
utility. Before you exit or disconnect the utility, the actual communication baud rate between
G35L and the utility keep unchanged.
For instance, suppose you login the utility with baud rate 4800 , and you want to download data
with baud rate 115200, then you need to take the following steps:
1. Select 115200 for “NMEA Baud” item.
