IDENTIFICATION OF PARTS OTHER THAN CASTINGS

1. PURPOSE
To specify markings on all parts other than castings produced worldwide.

2. LIMITATION
2.1 Identification requirements in this PI shall not include any “type” designations (TYPE 0, TYPE 1,
etc.). Requirements to be fully defined in this specification to avoid misalignment with engineering
drawings on future revisions of this PI.
2.2 Slant “A” is marked, style and proportion shall be per S9602.
2.3 Depressed letters such as stamped, rolled, etched, etc. are required unless otherwise specified. Mark
must be legible and adequate to survive normal life of the part. Raised material caused by marking,
beyond dimensional limits of part, must be approved by Garrett Engineering.
2.3.1 Ink stamp marking may be used but the mark must meet the following criteria.
The ink stamp must be of a size and clarity to be legible with unaided vision and must be
adequate to survive the normal life of the part. Exception as follows:
Stamped wheel shroud shall use “Ink stamps” or laser stamping. Steel stamping letters in a
sheet metal wheel shroud causes stress risers.
2.4 Manufacturer’s identification, if any, must be legible, and approved by Garrett. It also should be less
conspicuous than GARRETT identification.
2.5 OEM customer logo (Brand Mark), if applicable, must be on removable insert (which must be poke
yoked to ensure correct orientation) in the tooling.

3. REQUIRED MARKING IS AS FOLLOWS

3.1 V-band Clamps
3.1.1 Slant “A”
3.1.2 Manufacturer’s Identification
3.1.3 Part Number, Dash Number and Revision Letter
3.2 O-rings, square section rings, piston rings, thrust bearings permanently attached, miscellaneous
small purchased items (such as: rivets, drive screws, nuts, wear washers, lock washers, snap rings,
etc.), bellows, etc.
3.2.1 No marking required by this P.I.
3.3 Journal Bearings
3.3.1 Last four digits of part number, and dash number, in the end surface of bearing. Tracking
marks on this surface are acceptable provided no raised material is introduced and there
are no violations of drawing requirements.

3.14 Compressor Wheels (Machined)

3.14.1 Compressor wheels made from castings hipped according to PI-5896 will be further
identified by machining a chamfer 0.5-1.5MM by 45 degrees on the nose end of the wheel.
3.14.2 As an alternate to 3.14.1, machined compressor wheels made from castings hipped
according to PI-5896 may be identified by machining a full radius groove anywhere within
a 4.0MM distance from the nose end of the wheel, provided that the location of the groove
neither causes a sharp edge at the nose of the wheel, nor encroaches on blade fillets. The
depth of the groove shall be 0.5-1.5MM, the radius of the groove must be equal to or greater
than the depth, and no larger than 2.0MM.
3.14.3 Do not machine the chamfer or groove on any casting not marked per PI-5780.
3.14.4 Any compressor wheel which does not have both markings per PI-5780 and PI-5781 must
not be used in an application requiring hipped wheels.
3.14.5 Effective November 30, 2016 (revision CM of this PI), a unique serial number must be encoded
in a data matrix marked on the backdisk of the compressor wheel per requirements defined in
Appendix A and the following size, format, and location. The mark must be made with indelible
ink capable of withstanding a typical part washing cycle with mild detergent. No engraved
marks with measurable depth is allowed to the backdisk surface of compressor wheels.

3.17.1 Identification by Circle Mark (Visual)

In some cases the same TWA part number is produced by two suppliers; one is Garrett
and the other is an external supplier. The plant quality department needs identification to
differentiate between the parts. One such marking is done on the nose with the tool to
create a kind of mark after the ultrasonic check, so in such cases one producer can have a
half circle mark and other can have a full circle marking done. One such example is
shown in the table below. The markings shall be located on the nose of the turbine wheel
as indicated in the table below and is to be clearly visible when looked at from an
appropriate distance. This does not apply if data matrix is printed on nose.

order to facilitate manufacturing control and/or traceability. Height of individual character must
not exceed 3.18mm/0.125in and depth must not exceed 0.38mm/0.015in. Markings and locations
are to be identified on the ISIR (Initial Sample Inspection Report) or a subsequent inspection report
for approval by the Garrett Business Center responsible for the product.
NOTE: For Perkins OEM product portfolio only – No additional color markings (i.e. paint dots,
hand-written numbers/letters, etc.) are allowed on the outer surface, unless agreed with Garrett.
3.18.1 Machine shop identification required if it is not Garrett machine shop.
3.18.2 Identification markings are to be man readable. Depth of the marks may not exceed
0.51mm/0.020in. Marks must be of a size and clarity to be legible with unaided vision.

The identification markings per table below are to be followed. All markings shall be
located in the zone indicated in the table below. The zone is tail end section.
• Supplier SAP code determines the identification type to be followed
• Requirement of identification has to be evaluated early in the project with Supplier,
SQ&E, Buyer in consultation with Garrett plant and if needed only the identification
applies (basically identification is to differentiate sources supplying same part number
to same location)
• Identification No.1: Groove or Step at a specified distance. If a groove needs to be
added for a new part number, prior approval of shafts and bearings responsible
engineer is mandatory.
• Identification No.2: LASER marking applicable to part numbers only as agreed with
SQ&E, Buyer and not mandatory for all part numbers. Letters shall be 3 to 5 mm and
shall produce a smooth, uninterrupted curvilinear impression. Letters of all markings
shall be capital letters and consist of two alphabets e.g. AH. Letters are to be followed
sequentially, subject to availability (for e.g. AA to AZ, BA to BZ and so on…) at
vendor as it changes based on part numbers.
• TWA identification is covered in section 3.17.2 above

3.38 E-Turbo Data Matrix Marking

Data matrix marking shall meet the quality level DPM 2.0/5-20/660/(D|90) per ISO TR 29158
(AIM DPM-1-2006) unless otherwise specified. A verifier compliant with the quality standard
shall be used as required to certify quality level of marks when there is a disagreement with in-situ
grading at supplier and Garrett.
Verification of DMX codes is, therefore, a useful method to add to quality control procedures in
order to ensure that the DMX codes will scan correctly throughout the supply chain. Axicon 12900
should be used as a lab equipment for checking parts as per ISO 28590 or plant specific sampling
plan. It is important to note that only a sample of symbols in any batch or production run will
normally be verified, and 100% sampling is neither expected nor necessary.

3.38.1 Duplicate symbols may be required on some components. In case of duplicate symbols
on one component, the same information shall be encoded in each symbol.
3.38.2 Components serialized with data matrix shall maintain a database of information at the
marking location. The database shall meet the requirements given in Appendix A for
format, content, and transmission of data.
3.38.3 A light back-pass field shall be used behind the symbol and in the quiet zone, with dark
elements used for the symbol itself.
3.38.4 When engineering drawing requires data matrix, each component produced shall be
serialize with unique number encoded in a data matrix.
3.38.5 Serial numbers shall not be duplicated within 3 years. Marking stations shall have
systems to ensure serial numbers are not re-used. If components are scrapped after
serialization, the serial number of the scrapped part shall not be re-used within 3 years. If
a part is re-worked to bring it into compliance, the serial number shall not change.

APPENDIX A: Data Matrix Marking Standards & Data Traceability Standards

A.1 Data Matrix Serialization
Each component produced shall be serialized with unique number encoded in a data matrix.
Serial numbers shall not be duplicated within 3 years. Marking stations shall have systems to ensure
serial numbers are not re-used within that time period. If components are scrapped after serialization,
the serial number of the scrapped part shall not be re-used within 3 years. If a part is re-worked to bring
it into compliance, the serial number shall not change.
The serialized traceability number shall be encoded in machine-readable Data Matrix format per ISO
16022, ECC 200. A quiet zone of at least 1 element width is required.
Only the following ASCII characters (ISO 646) shall be used in the encoded data string.
Decimal Description
Codeword

Unless otherwise specified, the size of elements in the data matrix shall comply with the following
table. Larger element size is preferred when space is available.
Surface Roughness Laser Marking Ink Jet Marking
Requirement (Ra, µm)
Minimum Element Minimum Element
Size (mm) Size (mm)
1.6 0.19 0.40
3.2 0.25 0.60
6.4 0.40 0.80

Laser marked parts shall use a back-pass larger than the symbol by at least 1 element width, preferably
2 elements wide. The back pass will reduce glare on reflective surfaces, improve surface finish, and
improve contrast. The backpass shall be light and the symbol elements dark.
Duplicate marks may be required on some components. In case of duplicate marks on one component,
the same information shall be encoded in each mark.
Encoded content shall conform to the format specified by component type. Industry standards for
encoded headers, footers, field separators, and data identifiers (such as GS1 or MH10) shall not be used
unless explicitly requested.
A.2 Traceable Database
Components serialized with data matrix shall maintain a database of information. In addition to data
encoded in the data matrix, a database with component attribute data shall be maintained at the site of
the marking equipment.
Garrett reserves the right to collect information from the database through mutually agreed protocol.
The database should be a multi-threaded database (such as MySQL or MS Access) installed on a
Windows PC.
