1. (a)

FIGURE 1

FIGURE 1 shows two charges of magnitude +0.3µC are placed on each corner of
a triangle with sides 6.0 cm, 8.0 cm and 10.0 cm respectively. Calculate the

(i) magnitude and direction of the electric field at point P.


(ii) magnitude and direction of the electric force experienced on +0.6µC
placed at point P.

FIGURE 2 shows two parallel plates 12 mm apart in a vacuum. The top plate is
at a potential of +300 V and the bottom plate is at a potential of -300 V.

(i) Copy FIGURE 2 and sketch a possible path of the electron as it passes
between the plates.
(ii) Calculate the acceleration of the electron.

2. A 5000 µF capacitor is fully charging by 12 V battery, then it is discharge through 5


kΩ resistor. Calculate the

(i) charge stored in capacitor within 10 s during charging process.


(ii) time taken by the capacitor to decrease the charge by 60% of its maximum value.

3. (a) A cell has a terminal voltage of 1.35 V when it is connected to a 0.9 Ω external
resistor. When the resistance is increased to 2.4 Ω, the terminal voltage is 1.44 V.
Calculate the internal resistance of the cell.

(i) Determine I1, R1 and Ɛ2.


(ii) The amount of heat loss in R3 if the current flows through it for 2 minutes.
(iii) If the wire is cut off at X, what is the current flows through R 1.

4. (a)

FIGURE 4 shows a straight conductor of length 8.0 cm moves to the left with speed
5.0 𝑚𝑠 −1 in a region of inward direction of magnetic field. Calculate magnitude of the
magnetic field if induced e.m.f of the rod is 0.40 V.

(b) A rectangular coil of 400 turns of wire have dimension 3.0 cm x 1.2 cm. The coil is held
between the poles of a large magnet. The coil is rotating at frequency 60 Hz. Calculate the
maximum induced e.m.f. in the coil if the uniform magnetic field intensity is 600 mT
between the poles

(c) A coil of 100 turns has radius of 3.0 cm surrounding a long solenoid of length 70 cm has
20 turns. The current in the solenoid is decreasing at a rate of 200 A/s. Calculate the
(i) mutual-inductance.
(ii) induce emf in the coil.

5. An AC source of 10 V and frequency 50 Hz is connected in series to a circuit which


consists of a capacitor of 2 µF and resistor of 1 kΩ. Calculate the

(i) current flows in the circuit.


(ii) voltage across the capacitor.
(iii) phase angle between current and voltage.
(iv) power factor.
(v) power lost.

6. (a) An object placed 10 cm in front of a curved mirror produced an image 5 cm


behind the mirror. Calculate the

(i) focal length and state type of mirror.


(ii) radius of curvature.

(b) An object and a screen are placed 1.2 m apart from each other. A lens is placed
between the object and screen to produce an inverted image that has the same size
as the object. State the type of the lens and calculate its focal length.

FIGURE 5 shows two converging lenses of focal lengths 10 cm and 20 cm are 50


cm apart. The final image is formed between the lenses at the position as indicated.
Calculate the distance u1.

(d) A camera lens is coated with a thin film of magnesium fluoride to eliminate certain
reflected light. The refractive index of magnesium fluoride and the lens are 1.38
and 1.50, respectively. If the minimum thickness of the thin film is 75.0 nm,
determine the wavelength of the eliminated reflected light.

(e) A single slit is illuminated by a red light of wavelength 655 nm. The fourth
minimum diffraction pattern is located 11.0 m from the centre. Determine the
wavelength of visible light for which the fifth minimum is exactly the same
distance from the centerline.

8. (a) The most common isotope uranium, 238 92𝑈 , has atomic mass 238.050788 u.
Calculate the binding energy of the isotopes in joules

(b) Palladium -103 is used in cancer treatment and its half-life is 17 days. Determine
the initial activity of Palladium-103 if the mass of the sample is 0.25 g.
