Exercise 1

Your school will have a tour to Durban and you have decided to run a small business to help raise
pocket money for yourself.

Write a letter to your parents requesting for their permission and support in starting this
project.

In your letter you should include the following:

• reasons for this business venture


• clarifications of how you plan to run the business
• how it will benefit the family

Your letter should be about 150 - 200 words long.

You will receive up to 8 marks for the content of your letter and up to 7 marks for the style and

There is an ongoing debate about English being the passing subject in schools. A quick survey
was conducted to find out how other people feel about it. Below are some comments from
members of the public.
