Our point of view ~

Why is maths not an important subject?
Thank you, your honour. I'm (name) and I'm the member of opposition.
I disagree with the statement that maths is an important subject.
Instead of using dull numbers and understanding formulas we can simply just use a
calculator and thanks to modern day technology we can use the internet . So why waste
time? For example long division , it is a technique where one number can be divided by
another using nothing more than paper and a tremendous amount of time. Why waste time
when we can just use calculators.Maths consist of numbers and letters. When have you
actually applied algebra to real life ? Is it really that important and useful? There are topics in
maths for example ratio and proportions which are used to compare the exact amount of
something. We can use it for spreading something on bread but do we really care if it's the
exact amount of each ingredient. How does it really affect our lives? It's useless.Did
someone ever complain to you that it's not the same amount and did it affect you? It's the
same for algebra which is a big part of maths.
When did someone who you don't know in real life ask you to solve an algebraic or quadratic
equation? It depends on your career. You may be thinking that maths is essential to life.Albert
Einstein said "As far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they are not certain; and as
far as they are certain, they do not refer to reality." It is not useful to use real world
connections for each topic in a mathematics curriculum. Over 70% of people think that
maths is not useful. Maths is a skill that is not relevant to life . We reason about many things
like parenting, marriage, careers, finances and politics. Yet we have the argument about of
more STEM education. Do we need to learn how to reason things by learning algebra? The
idea is absurd. The maths we learn in school we don't see in real life . More advanced tools
like algebra and calculus are even less likely to be brought up to solve everyday problems.A
survey was conducted in the overall population on the use of maths. Only 13% scored as
proficient , while over half were below basic.Thank you!
