Project Project Overview
Overview
Built over the Sea of Marmara in Turkey’s Izmit
Bay between 2013-2016, the Osman Gazi Bridge,
or ‘Izmit Bay Bridge’, as it is often referred to, is
the fourth longest suspension bridge in the
world.
Spanning over 1.5km, the bridge’s construction
will revolutionise travel between the north and
south of the country, enabling passengers to
make the journey across the sea in just three

minutes instead of joining the long queue to take
the one-hour intermittent and uncomfortable
ferry ride or the alternative highly trafficked
100km detour over land. The bridge opened to
service on 30th June 2016.
The bridge is expected to become a highly
trafficked route through the country, both for
Turkish locals and for global businesses to
transport their goods between Asia and Europe.

Product Product Selection

Selection
Stirling Lloyd’s Eliminator system was specified
by KGM for the bridge deck waterproofing,
following numerous other high-profile
collaborations in Turkey, including the Bosphorus
Bridge, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and Haliç
Bridges.
Given the time limitations on the construction
work and the nature of the structure, the
selected bridge deck waterproofing system
needed to not only provide proven long-lasting
protection, but allow quick and easy application
too. Importantly, it also needed to have minimal
environmental impact over its lifetime.
Having worked on several major projects in the
country over the past thirty years, Stirling Lloyd
was contracted by IHI E&C to take the lead on
the waterproofing for the main central section of
the bridge. The coating process began on 14th
May and was completed within four weeks. In
that time, Authorised Contractor Erse coated
76,000m2 covering the entire central section of
the bridge. In addition, Stirling Lloyd’s Safetrack
HW was applied on the bridge’s walkways to
provide a high performance, long-lasting anti-
skid surface finish.

There were two phases to the waterproofing
application process: the preparation, followed by
the waterproofing system itself. In the initial
phase the steel bridge deck was prepared by
shot blasting using metallic grit. Next, once the
quality of the preparation had been approved,
meeting the Sa 2.5 Standard required, the speed
of application of the Eliminator waterproofing
system was paramount, to deliver against the
tight schedule.
The applicators were able to apply 4500-5000m2
of the bridge waterproofing system per day,
facilitating quick contract progression. This was
made possible due to the speed and ease of
application of the Eliminator system, together
with the fact that each element of the system
cures in under an hour, enabling the next
element of the system to be applied
immediately.

Umut Dizman, Marine works operations and
construction manager for IHI has said "Perfect
product to be used on steel deck bridges."
Daghan Erel, Regional Sales Manager at Stirling
Lloyd Polychem, for Turkey and Central Asia
comments: “We are very proud to have been
part of such a high profile and prestigious
project. The Osman Gazi Bridge will provide a
significant boost to the region’s economy and
will make a huge difference to travel costs and
efficiency for both local and foreign businesses
operating and transporting products through the
country.
“Given the significance of this project, we were
under a great deal of pressure to ensure that the
Eliminator was applied quickly and effectively to
protect the bridge for decades to come. To meet

these objectives, we had a skilled team on board
to ensure that the Eliminator product could be
applied quickly and safely; this was a key
element for a project such as the Osman Gazi
Bridge. We are confident that our product will
protect the bridge deck for years to come and
will help it to stand the test of time.”

needed to be carried out as quickly and as
efficiently as possible.
Not only is Eliminator a rapidly curing system but
it also provides a tough, durable membrane that
can withstand difficult site conditions. It will also
extend the service life of the bridge. This will
help to reduce maintenance costs in the long
term.
