DETAILED SYLLABUS:

UNIT-1: INTRODUCTION TO THE SOURCES OF ENERGY – resources and


development of power in India.
STEAM POWER PLANT: Plant layout, working of different circuits, fuel and
handling equipments, types of coals, coal handling, choice of handling equipment,
coal storage, ash handling systems.
COMBUSTION: properties of coal – overfeed and underfeed fuel beds, travelling
grate stokers, spreader stokers, retort stokers, pulverized fuel burning system and
its components, combustion needs and draught system, cyclone furnace, design
and construction, dust collectors, Dust collection and its disposal –Mechanical
type –Electrostatic Precipitator, cooling towers and heat rejection, corrosion and
feed water treatment, dearation.
UNIT-II: INTERNAL COMBUSTION AND GAS TURBINE POWER PLANTS:
DIESEL POWER PLANT: Plant layout with auxiliaries – fuel supply system, air
starting equipment, super charging. Advantages and Disadvantages of
Diesel plants over Thermal plants.
GAS TURBINE PLANT: Introduction – classification - Principles of working of
closed and open cycle gas turbines construction – layout with auxiliaries,
Combined cycle power plants and comparison.
UNIT-III: HYDRO ELECTRIC POWER PLANT: Water power – hydrological cycle /
flow measurement– drainage area characteristics – hydrographs – storage and
pondage – classification of dams and spill ways.
HYDRO PROJECTS AND PLANT: Classification – plant operation and pumped
storage plants.
NUCLEAR POWER PLANT: Nuclear fuel – breeding and fertile materials – nuclear
reactor– Components of Reactor– reactor operation,
TYPES OF REACTORS: Pressurized water reactor, boiling water reactor, sodium-
graphite reactor, fast breeder reactor, radiation hazards and shielding –
radioactive waste disposal.
UNIT-IV: COMBINED OPERATIONS OF DIFFERENT POWER PLANTS:
Introduction, advantages of combined working, load division between power
stations, storage type hydro-electric plant in combination with steam plant, run-
of-river plant in combination with steam plant, pump storage plant in
combination with steam or nuclear power plant, co-ordination of hydro- electric
and gas turbine stations.
POWER PLANT INSTRUMENTATION AND CONTROL: Importance of
measurement and instrumentation in power plant, measurement of water purity,
gas analysis, O2 and CO2 measurements, measurement of smoke and dust,
measurement of moisture in carbon dioxide circuit, nuclear measurements.
UNIT-V: POWER PLANT ECONOMICS AND ENVIRONMENTAL
CONSIDERATIONS:
Capital cost, investment of fixed charges, operating costs, general arrangement of
power distribution, load curves, load duration curve, definitions of connected load,
maximum demand, demand factor, average load, load factor, diversity factor –
related exercises, Performance and Operating Characteristics of Power Plant,
Effluents from power plants and Impact on environment – pollutants and pollution
standards – methods of pollution control.

tabulated as given below: The head available for river
A is 80m and river B is 82m. Using the below data
determine which river is more suitable for storage type
hydroelectric plant. Assume the overall efficiency of
generation is the same for both sites.

UNIT-V
9. a) Prove that the load factor of a power system is [7M] 5 KL3
improved by an increase in diversity of load.

b) A thermal power plant of 210 MW capacity has the [7M] 5 KL3


maximum load of 180 MW. Its annual load factor is
0.70. The coal consumption is 1kg per KWh of energy
generated and the cost of coal is Rs.450.00 per tonne.
Calculate i) the annual revenue earned if energy is
sold at Rs 1.5 per KWh, ii) the capacity factor of the
plant, and iii) the utilization factor.

10. a) The annual peak load on a 40MW power station is [7M] 5 KL3
30MW. The power station supplies load having a
maximum demand of 15MW, 9MW,7MW and 5MW.
The annual load factor is 0.5. Calculate (i) Average
load (ii) Energy supplied per year (iii) Diversity factor
(iv) Demand factor.
b) What are the sources of air pollution and methods to [7M] 5 KL2
control it? Explain any one method.
