Ee 314 Tutorial 2
1. (a) With aid of well labeled diagram, explain the working principle of a single-phase
cycloconverter considering that the output frequency is one-fourth of the input frequency.
Assume that the cycloconverter is supplying the resistive load.
(b) In question 1 (a) above, sketch the waveforms of the following;
(1) input voltage. (2) output voltage for zero firing angle (3) output voltage with firing
angle /3 rad. (4) output voltage with varying firing angle.
(c) Explain the effects of load inductance on the performance of cycloconverter.
2. Repeat question 1 above assuming that the converter is supplying the inductive-resistive
load. Also consider on both continuous and discontinuous load current mode of
operations.
3. The input voltage of a single-phase/single-phase cycloconverter is 120V,60Hz. The load
resistance is 2.5ohm and load inductance of 40millihenry. The frequency of the output
voltage is 20Hz. If the delay angle of thyristors is 2/4, determine,
(a) The rms output voltage
(b) The rms current of each thyristor
(c) The input PF. (0.315)
4. (a) With aid of diagram, explain the working principle of three-phase/single phase
converter.
(b) If its desired to have the output voltage with the frequency of one-fifth of the input
source frequency, sketch waveforms of;
(i) input voltage (ii) +ve converter output voltage (iii) -ve converter output voltage
(iv) output voltage of the converter.
6. Explain why 3-phase to 1-phase cycloconverter requires positive and negative group
phase-controlled converters. Under what conditions, the groups work as inverters or
rectifiers?.
