1 Question 1

Reflect on the work you've created and consider how your use of materials, tools, techniques and processes reflect the broader ideas and message you are interested in
conveying. What materials, tools, techniques and processes have you used, and how can you employ a broader range of materials and techniques to explore your theme in
Module 3? 16
th
April 2024
I have decided that an A3 will be the size of the canvas. I will use A3 because it is big enough to show the viewers clearly and isn’t too big for your eye to be overwhelmed.
12th April
I was thinking about what I will do in this project, it made me think about what I
created earlier this foundation year. I thought about all the different tools I explored
and the different results that were made. We tried lots of different techniques, the
most important technique we tried was photoshop. For me, photoshop works very
well as I am focusing on photography. And it allows me to adapt the image to suit
my message.

We tried photoshop to create a collage with photos we have taken. It’s very
interesting and useful to know; I also like the effect. I haven’t used photoshop for a
while. But just going back to it, the knowledge of photoshop is coming back to me.

15th April
Earlier in the year when we were doing Module 1 which included “Meaningful
Marks”. We worked with Chemigrams on photographic paper. This interested me
and particularly the idea of using different papers and fabrics.
I want to explore this idea of different types of printable materials in my exhibition
work.

26th April
I originally thought to use matte canvases; however, I have not used or tried to
print photos on canvases before. After taking advice from the print department I
have decided I am not comfortable printing my photos on fabric . Not only was this
too expensive but I am not confident that the result would be what I wanted. I have
decided to print on good quality matte photographic paper as I am more confident it
will present as clear and professional.

1st May
Once I decided the photos I went into Bower Ashton and spoke to one of the
teachers/tutors. I explained why is decided those photos and why I wanted those next to
each other. Then we moved into photoshop, because I wanted to just tweak them a little bit.
We had some discussions about how that technique works with the photos. Very positive
session with the teacher/tutor.
Question 2
Reflect upon the audience and method of dissemination for your work.

What does it communicate and who is it communicating to? What does it offer to the viewer/customer/client and their lifestyle? Where will the work be situated? How can
you market your work?

13th April
I want to show the different contexts of people’s lives. I also want to communicate with the
viewer to highlight the contrast in lifestyle and environment. I’m trying to encourage the
viewer to think about differences and to appreciate people living different lives.
At the moment, I am expected to put my work in a gallery. I’m still thinking about how I
would like to present my work in the gallery. I am developing a website to display my
work, and I’m thinking of including the work in there as well.
I also understand that we are collectively going to produce a website.

My idea of what my photos/project are going to show will connect with the viewers. The
work will bond with the viewer’s life, etc. “I used to live in that area” , “That is similar to
where I’m living right now”.

27th April
When I went into the city of Bristol, I came across a pro-Palestinian demonstration. For me
this was such ‘a moment in time’. My photos of the urban area show how cities often are a
place of politics and protest. Being in the city and not knowing this was going to happen,
really excited me. It lifted me up because it was a physical movement not just verbal. This
physical protest wouldn’t happen in a rural area. So, seeing this was very enjoyable.
When I’m saying, ‘a moment in time’, I mean that it will be remembered. Every day in a
city will be different versus a rural area which will be known as very similar every day.

Question 3
We make, design, and produce work to be shared, and to elicit a reaction or provoke a response.

What response would you like to provoke in your Audience/Client/Viewer/User? Are you the kind of designer/artist/producer who aims to disrupt - to entertain or to
question? Is your work ironic, playful, educational or political? Use this space to think about the response of your target audience on viewing your work - how do you want
them to react? What is an ideal response?
13th April
I want my work to resonate personally with the viewer, either because they live in the
countryside or in the city. I also want the observer to notice the contrast that people might
not otherwise see.
I want them to open their minds and appreciate an alternative environment.

I am attempting to encourage people to think outside of their life experience. A simple

contrast is that the speed in a city is fast-moving. However, the countryside is more
leisurely.

16th April
I have developed my thinking, and I am wanting to encourage people to think about their
proximity to nature. In a rural setting this is close but in cities nature is there but much
more hidden.

28th April
The more I choose my final images the more I am looking to create a sense of difference,
and this is what I want my audience to notice

What is your Project Concept?

In previous projects, we have focused on outcomes or objects, for this module we are expecting you to design an investigation and for this to
lead to an appropriate outcome/object which embraces your specialism and matches your burgeoning ambition.
Please outline the project themes - and the ideas that you wish to explore. Focus on the meaning behind the work rather than processes, materials or skills. (There is
a space for this information further on in the document) This is a short module - so it is critical that you make a swift decision and commit to an investigation early.
We know that this is hard - but push yourself and work to get to the making, design and production stage with confidence.
13th April 2024
Before moving to a university in a city, I lived and grew up in the countryside my whole
life. I was used to living in a rural area, so moving to a busy city was shocking to me
because of the difference and unfamiliarity of urban life.
The physical and visual contrast between living in the city and living in the countryside
(rural area) is huge.
This contrast leads me to what I want to focus on in this project. This is the difference
between lifestyle and environment.

16th April 2024

Thinking about my idea more, one of the things I want to capture how the familiar can
become invisible. Living in the countryside I don’t notice the natural objects around me but
returning from the city I notice the contrast much more. By putting natural and urban
scenes together both become more visible.

28th April 2024

As I selected my photos, I became more interested in the idea of time in the city and time
in the countryside. City/Urban areas are full to the brim; there is a constant flow of people
like a current of water or air, giving a timeless feeling. The countryside is fixed at a point in
time and ruled by seasons. Unlike in the city, in the countryside, the eye is caught by the
changing seasons and weather, the effect on trees, bushes, flowers and plants.

Please give an overview of the project here.

What will your work look like? What technologies/tools/equipment/processes will you use?
14th April 2024
I want to put my work on the wall at eye-level, so it is easy to view it as a whole. I want the
audience to look at the photos as if they are in the scene.
I want to create and show the contrast between the photos; however, I’m still thinking
about how I want to arrange my work on the wall.

17th April 2024

I’m thinking of printing the photos on canvas because I’m interested in the look of this. I
will need to test this out and feel the effect, I have taken advice on this, and I am going to
use A3 canvas.

26th April 2024

Following more thought I have decided against using canvas as my print medium instead I
will use matt photographic paper. I am considering having six images which will be
framed. I think this is enough to show contrast and my message but not too many that it
becomes confused. Choosing and arranging the final images will be really important and I
will have to test this out.

2nd April 2024

I went into Bower Ashton to have a discussion with my tutor about the sizes of my photos
and the frames.
We spoke about the previous sized I wanted. However, it wasn’t going to work with them
mounted. If I had the photos mounted it would end just seeing a A4 size of my photos, I
didn’t want that. So, my tutor taught me how to mount the photos digitally not physically,
the photos now are 30 x 40. Now I will have to decide the colour of the frames.

What skills will you need to develop in order to complete the work?
What will you need to learn? What existing strengths do you have that can help you to succeed?

13th April 2024

I will need to develop more with photoshop particularly with regard to exposure, and other
techniques.
I will need to take advice on printing and print media. I’m thinking of using a canvas and
frames to protect my work and to make the work stand out. I will need to research this.
As to my strengths, I am curious to try different ideas. I like to be spontaneous with my
work and the camera. Other people’s ideas give me inspiration for my own work. I like to
combine their ideas with my own (Ben Roberts, Artist)

27th April 2024

I have decided to not use Canvases because I’m not experienced in using them. As well,
usually photos are printed onto paper. I do want to frame my images and I have been
researching what frames to use. This is new to me. I will also have to practise mounting the
photos as I’ve not done this before

I’m also learning that I am taking so many images that reducing down to the final few is
taking a long time. I want to try and take less but more careful shots in the future.

What will you do to sustain your practice and to develop your motivation, understanding and confidence?
This focus of this question is your research practice - what has already inspired, informed and influenced you? How can you push yourself beyond your comfort zone
here?

14th April 2024

I have been inspired by the ideas of journey and travel; with the contrast they bring.
In my research, I found the work of Ben Roberts (Roberts, 2024) and his project “Work in
Progress -The Slow Train".
These photos are both urban and rural, of people and objects. His photos show the changes
in the urban and rural areas. These photos also reflect the cultures he experienced on that
long journey of 435 miles.

My idea for the project is to take the thoughts of Ben Roberts regarding his journey
through different areas and my own change of living in a different place.

I like the sense of “gallery blocks” to be impactful and allow comparison between photos.

For me what will be uncomfortable will be deciding the right photos I want to allow the
best comparison. As well, I think trying to use canvas will push me out of my comfort
zone.
20th April 2024

I started to take photos in the evening to show not just the day is different, but the evening
is different as well. However, I need to learn a bit more about my camera because the
photos didn’t capture things perfectly, the reason is that it was too dark and often the image
was blurred .
As well, the day after I thought that I didn’t take any photos in the evening at home in the
rural setting. So, I couldn’t compare them and show the contrast.

26th April
After taking my photos that I will use, I have learnt that I should take less photos from the
same area. I have learnt this because I took 1,502 photos overall. However, taking a couple
of photos in the same area allows you to compare them, but I took too many. I have
decided to use 3 photos for each of the rural and urban setting. I decided this because 3
photos from rural and 3 photos from urban comfortably shows the contrast between the
environments. Using more photos it may be overwhelming to the eye.

28th April
I couldn’t decide what image I wanted out of 14 photos, so I printed them out onto normal
A4 paper just to see them physical, so I can move them around and see which is best with
each other. I looked at 6 photos that I put together/ side by side to see what they will look
like on the wall. I didn’t think 6 photos were enough, so I added 2 more photos side by
side.
I went through them to decide which rural photos works with urban photos which will
show the most contrast between.

Task 1 – Part 2

This is a short module - and scheduling your activity and planning out your production arc will help to ensure that you keep the project on track, with time to make a
quality artefact for the exhibition. The best project concept in the world will not lead to a successful outcome without good, pragmatic planning. Remember,
gathering or "procuring" materials will take time - and supplier availability and high costs will slow you down and impact on your ability to make work. You must factor
this into your schedule. A prohibitively high cost on a particular material or item may prompt you to investigate a more easily sourced and cheaper alternative, which
can improve your carbon footprint - and improve the "sustainability" of the project.
Resources, Services and Tools - What will I need and what steps must be taken to ensure access and availability?
What do you think you will need to complete the project? How can you begin to negotiate access and co-ordinate your making with availability?

Use this page to identify aspects of your project relating to sustainability, unnecessary waste, and environmental concerns. What might you do to manage this and
reduce your impact? If you can’t manage it directly, could you take action to offset your carbon footprint? How will you plan for the end of life of your object/s, how
will you remove it from the studio at the end of the exhibition and how will you recycle and dispose of it? What is the recycling / disposal protocol for the materials
you are using? How is this affected once you combine materials together?

The plan is to take the photos first to start this project. So, I have all the material/ the base/
photos to create my formal work. Then, I will decide on the fabric/paper to print my photos
to, which I want to be sustainable to keep the environment healthy.

28th April 2024

I will need to finalise my choice of the 8 photos- 4 from each of the settings. I need these to
link together but have sharp contrast. I also want to arrange the photos so they can be
looked at individually but also as a whole. I will need to experiment with the layout.

Talking about the 1,502 photos I took:

As I said above, I have taken a large number of photos for this project and I have taught myself the best way to handle a high number of images. I decided to give myself a
couple of days to comfortably sieve through my photos and bring them down to just 8. I gave myself a few days because I knew if I tried to go through them all in one day, I
would lose my eye to see the difference / message / contrast between them.

I have learnt that I have taken too many photos for this project alone. I took around 400/500 photos in a rural/countryside area as well as 1000/1100 photos in a city/urban. I
took more photos in the city because there’s more variety of things going on compared to the countryside.

Reasons why I took many photos:

- I wanted to have a lot of choices.
“it’s better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it” – George Ellis.
- Different areas give different messages.
- I wanted to try taking the same photo but from different angles in my quest to capture the best look.
- It’s better to have more than less.

What I’ve learnt:

- Taking so many images from different angles gave me too many that could look the same, which actually made it harder for me to decide which was the best.
- Taking so many images meant that some didn’t have any impact or tell a story.

Next step:
- I made a goal for myself every day – the first day I wanted to get the number of images down to 80 - 100 from 1502 – that was quite easy because so many were the
same and it was easy to decide which ones I preferred. On Day 2 I first of all whittled them down further to 37 and then later that day I got them down to 20. On Day
3 I printed the 20 images out and physically went through them, trying them in different orders to find the best contrasts. Originally I wanted 6 images in my
exhibition but in the end I have 8.

How did I decide on the eight photos out of 1,502

Once I whittled it down to eight photos, I sat in my room with the printed eight photos; I was slowly organising which images I want next to each other.
My plan was to have two columns so the first decision was to decide which column will include which photos. I put the rural/countryside images on the left
side with the urban images on the right side; I decided this because moving from left to right is like moving forward, which is similar to me moving from the
countryside to a city.

I chose these photos because of the visual contrast and the contrast of my memories from when I took these images and how they link to other points of my life.
I can remember the time and what was happening in those images when I took the photos.
I found this tractor-trailer while walking my dog with my mum. I took my This art shows Japanese dragon graffiti. It is on the side of an Asian food
camera with me because the weather was good. The tractor was driving about shop in Bristol. The dragons in ancient Japan were drawn from mythology

got out and my mum and I chatted with him while I was taking photos of the I wanted to take a photo of this because it comes from the history of a
tractor and trailer. I had known the farmer my whole life from when I was whole country, which contrasts with the tractor/trailer image taken in a
really young. I sometimes used to help him in the fields. At home, I live next small village. The graffiti image is history experienced by the population
to one of his fields, so I often saw him. of the country whereas the tractor/trailer is just history from my own life.
Returning back to the image, seeing it brings back memories of my young Plus, the areas where these photos were taken - on a track in a village for
childhood. the tractor-trailer compared to a city with 467,099 for the dragon graffiti.
This photo is of the river in a little town. In this photo I thought this scene looked crowded. A rural
area is more likely to be crowded by nature, than by people.
Personally, I find nature to be healthy, both physically and mentally. Physically: walking in a green
crowd (crowded nature). Also, because there is less noise from cars, buses, scooters, and people, as
well as the air is cleaner and there's less pollution, oil, petrol, gas and viruses. Mentally: personally,
being in a natural location, my emotions are lifted because of the colours and the smell. All that I see
in this image reminds me of when I took that photo and brings back other memories.

This image is completely different. It's crowded with concrete and

bricks, and dull colours. The visual look shows the contrast between,
how everything in this image isn’t natural, and has all straight, vertical
and horizontal lines. Compared to the image of the river that has no
straight lines and everything is tangled up, curved and wonky. It kind
of looks like two different worlds.
This image has a story behind it. I walked the dogs in a
forest with my family and friends. It was raining that
day, and I saw this little stream flowing into a river
between twigs and branches.
I really liked this. However, I didn’t bring my camera
with me that day.
The day after, my mum and I went back to the forest to
take photos of the little stream. However, it wasn’t
raining that day, but as I had liked the rain's effect on
the stream we took a watering can to create the same
effect as the day before.

This image is taken with the idea of a stream, “a stream of

buses”. I took many photos of buses and cars in streams/traffic
and felt there was a similarity to that of streams of water. In a
city, it is more likely to have one main river winding its way
along buildings, rather than in a rural area which may have lots
of streams between trees. This shows the contrast of “streams”
in a rural location to river in an urban location.
I took many images in the countryside when I was walking my dog. The
weather was nice again, so I took my camera with me which I was pleased
about because getting a photo like this on a different day would not look the
same.
I got this photo because I wanted to show the really high contrast between
the colours, the lighting and the texture. Also, the height of this haystack
would be about three times my height.
This is a huge object but it doesn’t have any meaning as such unless you
compare it to something.

In April 2024, there was a demonstration protest for Palestine. The people
involved in this demonstration could say the sheet used for this message is
large, but compared to the large haystack in the image above, the sheet is
small. It is all relative. However, although it is small compared to the haystack
it has a deeper meaning than the haystack which has no political point.

Conclusion
This project has moved and inspired me. My hope is that the audience who sees my work will be moved in a similar way.
Overall, I enjoyed this project. I have learnt some points myself by going through it, and I think I have found the direction from which my creative ideas will
come (I'm not going to say yet, but I will surprise you) next year.
