Poultry Rearing
Poultry Rearing
Raising of birds domestically or commercially, primarily for
meat and eggs

•To protect birds from adverse climatic conditions

•To ensure easy and economic operation
•To ensure scientific feeding in a controlled manner
•To facilitate proper micro-climatic conditions in the near
vicinity of bird
•For effective disease control measures
•To ensure proper supervision
General layout of the Poultry House

▪ It should have the basic amenities like water and electricity.

▪ The poultry house should be located in an elevated area.

▪ It should have proper ventilation.

▪ There should be a minimum distance of 50-100 feet between the chick

and grower shed and the distance between the grower and layer
sheds should be of a minimum 100 metres.

▪ The egg storeroom, office room, and feed storeroom should be located
near the entrance to minimize the movement of people around the
poultry sheds.

Cage System
for Layers

Elevated Cage
system
Deep litter system
Based on the repeated spreading of straw or sawdust material in
indoor booths.

The birds are kept on suitable litter material of about 3” to 5” depth.

An initial layer of litter is spread for the animals to use for bedding
material and to defecate in, and as the litter is soiled, new layers of
litter are continuously added by the farmer.

Usually, paddy husk, sawdust, ground nut hulls, chopped paddy

straw, or wood shavings are used as litter materials.
Cage system
The cage system of rearing birds has been considered a super-intensive
system providing a floor area of 450-525 sq. cm (0.6-0.75 sq. feet) per
bird.

In a cage, the birds are kept in one, two, or three per cage, arranged in
single or double or triple rows.

This system involves the rearing of poultry on raised wire netting floor in
smaller compartments, called cages, either fitted with stands on the floor
of the house or hanging from the roof.

It has been proven very efficient for laying operations.

Battery Cage system
This is the most intensive type of poultry production and is useful if
floor space is less.

In the battery system, each hen is confined to a cage just large enough
to permit very limited movement and allow her to stand and sit
comfortably.

The usual floor space is 14 x 16 inches and the height is 17 inches.

The floor is of standard strong galvanized wire set at a slope from the
back to the front, so that the eggs, as they are laid, roll out of the cage
to a receiving gutter. Underneath is a tray for droppings.
Elevated Cage system
The height of the shed is raised by 6-7 feet using concrete pillars. The
distance between the two pillars is 10 feet.

Two feet wide concrete platforms are made over the pillars.

The inter-platform distance is 6-7 feet depending upon the type of cages
used.

The total height of the house is 20-25 feet and the width is 30-33 feet.

This type of house provides sufficient ventilation in tropical countries.

Poultry Housing for Broilers

Cage system of rearing is commonly followed

To prevent breast blisters, the bottom of the cage may be coated with
some plastic materials.

The floor space requirement in cages is 50% of the floor space needed
in deep litter.
