PT-S-1 Secondary Seal Installation

1. The PT-S-1 secondary seal must be installed working in a anti-clockwise direction. Before
commencing installation, please check the hole pitches on the pontoon rim to see if there is
an odd rim pitch present. If so, commence seal installation to the left of the odd pitch.

2. Put a layer of gasket tape onto the pontoon rim where the secondary seal is to be situated.
Push the tape over the bolts & nuts with the adhesive side facing down.

3. Unroll the Vapour barrier membrane around the pontoon rim with the large Ø19 holes
nearest to the tank shell. Position these holes over the rim/bolts nuts with the small Ø8
holes edge being allowed to hang freely into the rim space. The 2 ends of the membrane are
to be overlapped by a minimum of 2 holes. Cut off any excess material. Bring the 2 ends of
the membrane back onto the roof and make final joint with adhesive supplied. (See
separate instructions).

4. Position membrane back into position over bolts on pontoon rim.

5. Position compression plates over the bolts, each plate overlapping the next plate in a anti-
clockwise direction. Position compression plates around full circumference.

6. Place channel clamp bars into position. Channels should be centrally aligned to the
compression plates. Place M10 nut & washer over bolts & hand tighten only.

7. Locate the free edge of the vapour barrier membrane & locate the Ø8 holes over the fixed
M6 bolts on the top of the compression plates. Work around full circumference.

8. Begin to position wiper extrusion placing over M6 bolts. Always start extrusion in between
bolt ctrs on a individual compression plate & position wiper holes as centrally over the M6
Bolts as possible. Whilst installing wiper, fit earthing shunts as shown in drawing 30016.
Shunt’s are spaced at 1 every 5 compression plates (approx 1 every 3mtr’s maximum).
Continue to fit wiper around tank circumference, if the hole pitch in the wiper runs out,
some slight adjustment can be made by moving the compression plates. If any adjustment is
made to the plate position, please ensure that the plates remain overlapped and are
adjusted radially.

9. Do not force wiper over M6 bolts. If wiper holes do not fit over bolts, cut wiper in the centre
of the last compression plate bolts & re start wiper installation. Always fit Wiper joint
saddles in between every individual wiper joint – see drawing 30016. When starting to fit
the next piece of wiper ensure that the bolt in the compression plate is centered in the hole
in the rubber wiper.

Always ensure that the joint between individual lengths of wiper is positioned in between bolt
ctrs on a individual plate. Do not install wiper joint in between individual compression plates.
Cut wiper with a knife if necessary.

10. Fit Z-clamp bars over the tack welded bolts. Z-clamp bars must be fitted centrally on each
individual compression plate – do not fit between individual compression plates. Note the
holes on the z-clamps are offset. The shorter section between holes & vertical leg in z-
clamp should fit over the vertical leg in the compression plate. Pull the compression plates
forward & bend the wiper back so that the vertical leg with the larger section fits
underneath the lip on the wiper extrusion. See drawing 30017.

11. Install L-clamp bars. Similar to Z-clamps, L-clamps must be fitted centrally on each
compression plate, do not fit between individual compression plates. Fit M6 nuts & washers
over tackwelded bolts – hand tighten only.

12. Check assembly to ensure that the spaces between each compression plate is even & each
plate has a sufficient overlap.

13. Tighten M10 nuts on the rim.

14. Tighten M6 Nuts on wiper assembly. Recommended Torque settings as below :-

M6 Stainless steel fasteners = 13.53 N/m.

M6 Plated fasteners = 8.13 N/m.

Installation of Tubeseal
a) Tube
b) Scuffband

They are packed in separate boxes marked with the appropriate contents.

1. The Tube should be left in its box until ready to install.

2. The Scuffband box should be positioned adjacent to the sample column or odd space where the
overlap should occur and installation should begin.

3. The box should be opened with the lid and all four sides being removed.

4. All nails MUST be removed from the box prior to the scuffband being rolled out.

5. All loose objects on the roof i.e. nuts, bolts, welding rods etc must be conscientiously removed. The
entire pontoon must be swept thoroughly.

6. Ensure there are no sharp protrusions which may cut the seal.

7. Lay out scuffband around the pontoon with the non serrated side onto the pontoon i.e.serrations
upwards.

8. Starting at the overlap, work round that tank towards the other end of the seal.

9. Lower approx. 3M of the scuffband down into the rim space. From below the roof, attach the lower
edge of the scuffband to the bottom angle using the bolts and clamp bars supplied. Start by clamping
through the first hole on the clamp bar, through the scuffband and attach to the angle Count the
number of holes in the clamp bar and the corresponding number of holes on the seal and angle and
attach the last hole with a nut and bolt. At this stage do not tighten the bolts/nuts. Continue this
procedure round the tank and overlap the start a minimum of two holes (max 6 holes). The hole
spacing on the scuffband is always slightly larger than that on the metal parts (as the scuffband length
equals the tank shell circumference) this surplus must be “lost” on each hole space, attaching the
first and last hole in each clamp bar then working inwards allows for this.

10. Put one bolt in the top of the scufband every 10/15 hole spaces, and temporarily connect to the top
angle (do not use the clamp bar).

11. Continue this round the tank, securing the top of scuffband with one temporary bolt/nut every 10/15
spaces.

12. When the final overlap is reached, ensure that the closing end overlaps the start end by a minimum of
2 holes.

13. The intermediate nuts and bolts along the bottom edge of the seal should now be inserted and all the
bottom nuts and bolts should be tightened. (A tool fitted with a 90-degree socket is ideal).

14. At this point, ensure that the scuffband for a “Bag” below the lower mounting angle.

15. The box containing the tube should now be opened by removing the top and sides and all the nails.
The tube should be removed from the box and laid our around the roof, GREAT CARE being taken not
to snag or scuff the tube in any way. REPORT ANY DAMAGE, HOWEVER SLIGHT, TO YOUR
SUPERVISOR.

16. The start and finish point of the tube should not coincide with the start and finish of the scuffband (at
least 3M apart) and an area of approximately 3M should be left open at the top of the scuffband
attachment to secure and fill the tube. When commencing the tube installation, leave approximately
1M of the tube protruding out of the scuffband, laying this on top of the pontoon.

17. The tube should be introduced into the open scuffband between the pontoon rim plate and the
scuffband, ensuring that the tube is inserted into the bag formed at 14 above. The temporary bolts,
attaching the top of the scuffband to the rim angle, should be removed several at a time and the
scuffband held open whilst the tube is inserted and the bolts replaced afterwards.

18. The tube should be installed completely round the tank and the scuffband fixed in place using the
nuts / bolts and clamp bars supplied.

19. The ends of the tube are closed by clamping between the scuffband and the rim angle. The tube is
folded back on itself diagonally at 90 degrees to the circumference and the resulting vertical section
is the piece that is clamped. Holes need to be punched in the tube to coincide with the hols in the rim
angle securing the scuffband to the rim. The end of the tube must be taken past the start of the tube.
The start of the tube is clamped loosely to allow air to escape during filling and the other end is used
as the fill point. A standard 2” tanker hose fed from a road tanker is used to fill the tube and ideally a
valve should be fitted close to end of the fill hose. See dwg No 30141.

20. The theoretical volume of kerosene for each tank diameter is given on the drawing. When 90% of the
required kerosene has been pumped into the tube, pumping should be stopped and the kerosene
allowed to settle.

21. Locate a position where the rim space is nominal and check that the seal contact height is about
125mm. Is contact is less than 125mm the final 10% of kerosene should be pumped in but no more
than the volume stated on the drawing should be used.

22. When the tube has been filled, the filling end should be folded similarly to the start end and clamped
in the same way. The end of the tube should overlap the start of the tube by about 30cm.

23. Before finally closing the scuffband, very carefully punch two 10 mm dia holes in both ends of the
tube immediately below the clamp bars. This is to allow the escape of air during roof movement.

A Guide to Kerosene Requirements

10” Dia Tube (254 mm) 30/33 litres per metre
11” Dia Tube (280 mm) 37/40 litres per metre
12” Dia Tube (305 mm) 42/47 litres per metre
14” Dia Tube (350 mm) 60/65 litres per metre

The Tubeseal is the best possible seal for distorted tanks, but because of the variations in the rim gaps, the
following method should be adopted when filling tubes in distorted tanks.

1. Fill and area where the rim gap is the average of the actual measured gap.

2. Fill the tube with kerosene until this area has a minimum contact depth of 125mm with the shell. Stop
Filling.

3. Check the remainder of the tank and in an area of maximum rim gap, check that the contact depth is
approximately 100 mm. Adjust any further filling until this 100 mm has been achieved.

4. It is very important that the tube is not overfilled as this could lead to the tube bursting.

5. If a secondary seal is to be fitted, consult the appropriate instructions.
