Equivalent Fractions

When two fractions show the same quantity, they are called

equivalent fractions.

Example1.

Look at this figure

The same shape has been divided into 4 equal parts, but

they all make half.

So 2 , 4 , 6 and 8 are equivalent fractions

Example 2

Now look at this pizza.

John wants ½ a pizza. He can have it as 1 slice, 2 slices, 3

slices or 4 slices, but they all make half a pizza.

Do you notice that the four pizzas show 4 different

fractions, but the same sized quantity? These are called
equivalent fractions.
