Timing belt: removal/installation


Warnings and recommendations
Unless otherwise advised by the manufacturer, the following procedures are recommended:
Always fit a new timing belt after removal
Coolant pump renewal is recommended after timing belt removal
Recommendation: When renewing the timing belt, renew the tensioners and pulleys
Caution! If a coolant pump is fitted with seals/sealing rings, do not apply liquid sealant
Never turn the engine in the direction opposite to that of normal operation
Check the belt(s) for cracks, fraying, wear and oil contamination
Note: The engine must be cold before timing belt adjustment
Note: Avoid bending, torsion or traction
Note: Attach a sticker to the engine compartment showing the mileage and date of the replacement operation
General
Before disconnecting the battery cable, check the audio system security code
Always check the timing marks before timing belt removal

Removal
Disconnect the battery
Remove the front right wheel
Remove the engine lower covers
Support the engine

Remove the left centre engine mount

Loosen the coolant pump pulley bolts


Loosen the alternator bolts
Remove the ancillary drive belts
Remove the coolant pump pulley
Remove the crankshaft pulley

Remove all the timing belt covers

Turn the crankshaft to TDC for cylinder 1


Align the timing marks

Loosen the tensioner


Push the tensioner pulley away from the timing belt

Tighten the tensioner


Remove the timing belt
Check the gearwheels, tensioner and idler pulley(s) for damage and wear
Installation
Check the timing marks
Fit the timing belt
Loosen the bolt (1)
Loosen the bolt (2)

Adjust the tensioner


Tighten the bolt (2)
Tighten the bolt (1)

Turn the engine 1 revolution clockwise by hand


Loosen the tensioner (1, 2)
Tighten the tensioner
Tighten the bolt (2)
Tighten the bolt (1)

Refit the timing belt covers

Fit the crankshaft pulley


Refit the coolant pump pulley
Refit the ancillary drive belts
Refit the engine mounting bracket

Refit the front right wheel


Remove the jack
Reconnect the battery
Torque settings
Crankshaft gearwheel
Crankshaft gearwheel 140 - 150 (Nm)
Crankshaft pulley
Timing belt tensioner pulley
Timing belt tensioner pulley 20 - 27 (Nm)
Engine mounting bracket to engine: (50 - 60 Nm)
