SUBJECT DROPPED OBJECTS FROM HEIGHTS

There are many objects in the workplace – equipment, materials, tools and debris
that can fall onto someone and cause serious injury or even death. Workplaces
must minimize the risk of an object falling on a person by providing adequate
protection against the risk.

• Enclose the work area

• Use tool and
equipment tethers
• Use exclusion zones
• Provide catch measures
• Mitigate any wind
exposure
• Use bucket to store loose
materials.
• Use safety net
underneath of elevated
work.

• Worker drops an object from heights

• Object is knocked from an elevated work area and falls
• Non-fixed object falls during high wind event
• Unplanned or uncontrolled fall of materials
• Fall of an object due to improper design, installation, maintenance or use
• Demolition causes an uncontrolled fall of materials.

A variety of DROP calculators are available and give a general idea of the potential
severity of a dropped object. A detailed and specific risk assessment will always
deliver a more accurate calculation of potential severity.
