ANALYTICAL QUESTIONS: Solve the following problems by showing the complete

workings in the space provided below.

1. The beaker shown has a mass of 16 g when empty and 28 g when filled to the 10 cm3 mark.

A) What is the density of the liquid in the beaker?

B) If we put a block with a density of 0.95 g/cm 3 in that liquid, will it sink or float? Explain your
answer.

2. The diagram represents gas particles in a container. The container is at room temperature.

Describe the motion of the gas particles.

3. The picture shows a bimetallic strip.

If the linear expansion coefficient of A is 0.000011/ oC, and the linear expansion coefficient of B is
0.000019/oC. What is the possible bend made from a bimetallic strip (X or Y)? Explain your
answer.

4. A liquid-in-glass thermometer is placed in some ice made from pure water. The ice is heated. It
changes to water and then to steam.
The graph shows how the temperature varies with time. The values of temperature are missingfrom
the y-axis.

A) Suggest a value for the temperature at each of the three points marked on the y-axis of the
graph. Write a value in each of the boxes.
B) In both section X and section Y the line on the graph is horizontal. For each section, state the
name for the process taking place and explain what is happening to the molecules.
Section X: ……………………………………………
Section Y: ……………………………………………

5. How long will it take a 50 W heater to melt 100 g of ice at 0oC?
A) Calculate the heat/energy needed to make the ice melt.
[Given: specific latent heat fusion (Lf) is 340 J/g, specific latent heat vaporization (Lv) is 2300
J/g]

B) Calculate the time, use the equation ΔE = P x t [ΔE is energy needed in J, P is power in Watt,
t is time in second].

6. How much heat is needed to change 25 g of ice at -10oC to steam at 100oC?

ice water
Specific heat capacity: J/(g.oC) 2.1 4.2
Specific latent heat: J/g 340 2300
A) Make a heating curve from ice at -10 C to steam at 100oC.
o

B) Calculate the heat needed (Q) for each step.

C) Calculate the Q total (Q1-Q4).

7. Classify groups of planets in the solar system based on their characteristic.

8. Look at the picture below.

A. Calculate the distance travelled from A to B.

B. The displacement from A to B.

9. Look at the picture below. Complete all labels with the type of motion.

10. Anna is driving her car in a straight line.

The car begins at rest. She accelerates uniformly to a speed of 10 m/s over 10 seconds.
Anna drives at the same speed for the next 30 seconds.
She then accelerates uniformly to a speed of 40 m/s by 50 seconds.
The remainder of the 60 seconds journey is spent decelerating to rest.
A) Draw a speed-time graph for her journey.

B) What is the total distance travelled from her journey?

C) Write down the average speed for the total journey.
