1 – Volume of Prisms and Pyramids

Prism – a solid with base and top faces that are congruent, parallel polygons.

Congruent – identical in size AND

shape.

Polygon – a 2D shape with

straight sides.

Pyramid - a solid with a polygon base. All other faces are triangles.
The image is an example of a square-based pyramid.

Volume – the amount of space occupied by an object. It is measure in cubic units. For example,
cm3, m3, mm3.

To find the volume of a prism, multiply the area of the base by the height of the prism.

Formula for the Volume of a Prism

V = Abase × h

Example One
What is the volume of the prism?
Example Two
Michael calculates the volume of a rectangle prism with width 5 cm, height 4 cm, and length 8
cm to be 160 cm2. What is his mistake?

Example Three
A tent is in the shape of an equilateral triangular prism. How much space is there inside the
tent?

The volume of a pyramid is one third the volume of a prism with the same base and height.

Formula for the Volume of a Pyramid

V = [Abase × h] ÷ 3

Example Four
Calculate the volume of the pyramid.
