ABOUT THE SCIENTIST
Thales of Miletus (born c. 624–620 BCE—died c.
548–545 BCE) philosopher renowned as one of the
legendary Seven Wise Men, or Sophoi, of antiquity. He
is remembered primarily for his cosmology based on
water as the essence of all matter, with Earth a flat
disk floating on a vast sea. The Greek historian
Diogenes Laërtius (flourished 3rd century CE),
quoting Apollodorus of Athens (flourished 140 BCE),
placed the birth of Thales during the 35th Olympiad
(apparently a transcription error; it should read the
39th Olympiad, c. 624 BCE) and his death in the 58th
Olympiad (548–545 BCE) at the age of 78 (see
philosophy, Western: The pre-Socratic philosophers).
INTRODUCTION
The center of a circle is the center point in a circle
✓ from which all the distances to the points on the
circle are equal. This distance is called the radius
of the circle.

✓ Semi means half, so semicircle is half a circle. It

is formed by cutting a whole circle along a line
segment passing through the center of the circle.
This line segment is called the diameter of the
circle.

✓ Quarter means one-fourth. So, a quarter circle is a

quarter of a circle, formed by splitting a circle into
4 equal parts or a semicircle into 2 equal parts.
A quarter circle is also called a quadrant.
WHY STUDENT SHOULD
STUDY ABOUT CIRCLE ??

It is relevant because many useful

objects that are fundamental in our
daily lives are circular, like the
wheel. Knowing all the properties of
the circle assists us in the creation
of circular objects. It also assists
us in activities like the compilation
and interpretation of maps.
Spheres are circular, and the world
we live in is spherical.
IMPORTANCE IN DAILY LIFE
Today, circles are still significant symbolically;
they frequently stand for peace and unity. Take a
look at the Olympic logo, for instance. It contains
five overlapping rings of various colours that
collectively symbolise the world’s five major
continents, which are joined in a spirit of healthy
rivalry.
In mathematics, the study of the circle led to the
development of geometry, calculus and astronomy.
In architecture, the arc is the strongest structural
shape because stress is distributed equally along
the arc instead of concentrating at any one point.
