● A star delta starter, also called a Wye-Delta starter, is the most commonly used method for
the starting of a 3 phase induction motor.
● In star-delta starting a motor’s stator winding is connected in a star connection throughout
the starting period, limiting the starting current to minimize stress on both the motor and
the electrical system.
● Then once the motor reaches the required speed, usually about 80% of its full load speed,
the motor connection is reconfigured into a delta connection.
Where Are Star-Delta Starters Used?
● A star delta starter is an electrical circuit used to initiate and regulate the speed of
● Its popularity stems from its capability to reduce the initial surge of current and torque
● The star delta starter is not suitable for applications where high starting torque delivery is
required. For these applications, a DOL starter should be used instead.
● If the motor is too heavily loaded, there will not be enough torque to accelerate the motor
up to speed before switching over to the delta position. An example application for a star
delta starter is a Centrifugal compressor.
Applications Cont’d
Induction Motors:
● Most induction motors are started directly on the line, but this method causes a disturbance of
voltage for very large motors on the supply lines due to large starting current surges.
● To limit these surges, large induction motors are started at reduced voltage and then have full
supply voltage reconnected when they run up to near their rotated speed.
● The star-delta starter is commonly used for such motors to achieve a smoother startup and reduce
electrical stress.
Centrifugal Compressors:
● Star-delta starters are ideal for situations where low starting torque is adequate.
● They excel in driving centrifugal compressors, where minimal starting current is beneficial.
