9. Date of commencement of the Project:11/11/2023

10. Probable date of completion of the project: 22/05/2024

11. Scope / Objectives of the project:

 Transforming kitchen waste into hygienic liquid nutrient solutions suitable for indoor
vegetable plants aims to curtail the volume of waste added to municipal disposal while
promoting a sustainable and beneficial recycling process.

 To cultivate mint, cucumber, and tomato in a hydroponic system with the use of nutrient
solutions obtained through kitchen waste by bore water and portable water

 Assessing the effectiveness of the hydroponic system by comparing its performance when
utilizing biofertilizer and chemical fertilizer as nutrient solutions.

12. Methodology:

Preparing the liquid fertilizer:

Once the kitchen waste is generated and collected in a suitable size plastic bucket,
water is added up to its rim. The bucket is closed loosely and kept outside in the
open away from the kitchen and domestic area. It may take around a week to get
the liquid fertilizer from the waste when the microorganisms developed in the
bucket start decomposing the waste indicated by a foul smell nearby the setup.
Appropriate measures such as face mask and hand gloves need to be used to deal
with the liquid fertilizer under formation.

Collecting the liquid fertilizer:

Usually, the liquid fertilizer can be collected after a week which is the perfect time
to collect as kitchen waste contains ingredients with different composting life. If
the experiment is performed in a hot arid place where the temperature is high, the

KSCST: Student Project Programme: 47th series: 2023-2024 3

process may be quicker. It is advisable to stir the waste on an alternative day to
help the decomposing process to be faster. The liquid waste which is dark in color
is collected straining through a mesh after a few days. Dilution of the liquid by
adding water of about ten times of its volume is done for making the liquid
fertilizer ready to be used. This will dilute the alcoholic content of the waste, if any
formed during the process of composting. The liquid is now rich in many nutrients
and is useful as nutrient solutions for hydroponic system.

How Hydroponic works:

Contrary to conventional farming, hydroponics does not use soil to grow food.
This method involves growing plants on artificial or natural substrates so that the
roots may easily draw nutrients from a prepared nutrient solution. The
implementation of various hydroponic farming techniques varies depending on the
type of plant, regional climate, and financial constraints, among other things. The
majority of systems include an aerator and a tank for the nutritional solution, as
illustrated in Figure 1.
 A nutrient solution is mixed into the water in the control room.
 From here it is pumped into troughs which house the net pots with the crops.
 Since the water directly reaches the roots, it is absorbed much better and
much less water is required since nothing is lost in the soil absorption.
 In this, the plants absorb the nutrients from the water and using sunlight they
produce the yield.

Nutrient Film Technique:

The Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) system (Figure 2) suspends the plant over a
continuous stream of nutrient solution that cleans the ends of the plant's root
system. The channels that hold the plants are angled, allowing water to flow the
entire length of the plant tray before being drained into the tank below. After that,
the water in the tank is aerated with air stones. A submersible pump then pumps
nutrient-rich water back from the reservoir to the top of the canal. The Nutrient
Film Technique System is a recirculating hydroponic system.

Expected Outcome of the project:
 The proposal will address food security for growing population through
the developed hydrophonic system
 Achieving self-sustenance by growing vegetable crop in the less space
and attaining good yield with less water using organic fertilizer.
 The system utilizes the borewell water and gives possible solutions for
the usage of hydrophonics where bore water is major constituent.
 The developed low cost hydroponic system will be the urban farming
solution.
