Objective:
To Verify and Observe the output waveforms of half wave rectifier by
using Digital Storage Oscilloscope.

Apparatus required: 230v power supply, socket cable, trainer kit of half wave
rectifier, Digital storage oscilloscope with connecting BNC type probes,
connecting cables for half wave rectifier trainer kit.

Theory:
The primary objective of rectification is to establish a DC level from a sinusoidal
input signal that has zero average (DC) level. Most of the electronic equipment
requires DC voltage for their operation. Yet our electrical distribution system is an
AC system. Therefore it must be changed to DC before the electronic equipment
can be operated. The diode, because of its one-way conduction characteristic, is
the basic element for rectification process.
A half wave rectifier is a special case of a clipper. In half wave
rectification, either the positive or negative half of the AC wave is passed easily,
while the other half is blocked, depending on the polarity of the rectifier. Because
only one half of the input waveform reaches the output, it is very inefficient if used
for power transfer. Half-wave rectification can be achieved with a single diode in a
single phase

Procedure:
a) Set all the equipment’s with required probes with A.C. power supply and
Construct the circuit for half wave rectifier.
b) Do not switch on the half wave trainer kit and digital storage oscilloscope
before fix the all connections.
c) Connect all the connection according to the manual of half rectifier or the
given diagram.
d) Turn on the DSO and for observing the waveform of rectifier so connect the
channel- 1 for collecting A.C. signal and respectively, channel -2 for
collecting D.C.signal which is displayed on the oscilloscope.
e) Finally collect both waveforms on oscilloscope display .
f) Analyze the input – output waveforms on displayed of DSO.

Applications:

The Half Wave rectifier is mainly used for the following applications:

 They are used for rectification applications

 They are used for Signal demodulation purpose
 They are used for Signal peak applications

Precautions:

a) Make sure all equipment’s are off while connections is not completed.
b) After analyze waveforms, off both devices.
c) It is required to proper coupling according to the channels.
Results:

According to the signal, channel – 1 is generated A.C waveform on upper part of

the display and channel-2 is generated D.C. waveforms on the lower part of
display.
