This increase in awareness of alcohol dependence is essential to improve well-being and

dispel the stigma faced by those associated with alcohol dependence.

The National Mental Health Survey of India (NMHS, 2016) noted that the prevalence of

alcohol use disorder is significantly high (4.6%)and treatment gap is estimated to be 86.3%.

Alcoholism is a complex problem with medical and social ramifications that impact all social

strata. With this backdrop, the knowledge and awareness of youth alcohol dependents in de-

addiction centers have been studied by the authors to elicit their opinions, understand their

perceptions, and problems, and to find out suitable solutions.

Statement of the Problem

Alcohol dependence is a disease like other diseases(Jellinek 1997). In the next 5-6 years, the

age of onset of drinking is expected to come down to 15 years. The rising income level of

youngsters is one of the primary reasons for the increasing consumption of alcohol (National

family health survey 2007). Although, a few studies done on them looked at it mainly from

the psychological perspective, knowledge and motivation researches on these youth alcoholic

dependents in Karnataka are few. The study will also provide data on the psychological well-

being and relapse prevention of alcoholic dependent admitted to de-addiction centers. The

study’s findings will help the policymakers, academics, social workers, and civil society look

into these areas and work on these issues. Ryff psychological well-being, knowledge,

motivation, and relapse prevention of persons with alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS)

attending the outpatient department of selected de-addiction centers, Bangalore Urban and

Rural, and Kolar districts.
