ECONOMICS SUBJECTIVE WORKSHEET 1

Chapter: DEVELOPMENT Class: X -_____

Name: _______________ Roll Number: ____
Maximum Marks: 20 Time Allotted: 30 min.
Worksheet Date: 15/04/24 Submission Date:17/04/24

1 Your friend is 150 cm tall and have weight 40kg Find out his BMI and comment 1
on his report.
BMI= Weight in Kg/ (height in m)2
40/(1.5x1.5)= 17.8
2 State the difference between literacy rate and net attendance ratio. 2
Literacy Rate measures the proportion of literate population in the 7-and-above
age group.
Net Attendance Ratio is the total number of children of age group 14 and 15 years
attending school as a percentage of total number of children in the same age
group.

3 “The quality of our life depends on non-material things.” Justify the 2

statement with examples.
Non-economic/non-material goals: On which quality of our life depends. Other than
income people also seek things like equal treatment, friendship, freedom, security,
and respect for others. There are many things that are not easily measured but they
mean a lot to our lives. These are often ignored.

4 “Though the level of income is important, it is an inadequate measure of the level 3

of development.” Justify the statement with an example.

It is true that income is an important way to measure the level of development but
it is also true that it is not the only way to measure the level of development. It is
an inadequate method of measuring development since it is only the materialistic
measure of development based on money.
Over the past few decades, health, education, sanitary and other non-materialistic
indicators have become an important criteria in measuring the level of
development.
The Human Development Index, for example, is a better measure of development
since it takes into consideration health and education indicators as well.
For example, even though the income of Haryana is more than that of Kerala,
Kerala has a higher HDI because it has better health and educational facilities.
5 ‘The question of sustainability of development raises many fundamentally new 3
issues about the nature and process of development.’ Explain it with examples.

This means that resources are used in a way that does not deplete them for future
use.
a) This is crucial for long-term development as it ensures that future generations
also have the resources they need to develop and thrive. b) Sustainability also
promotes the effect of resources in such a way that they do not harm the
environment. Planned use of resources will enhance future development in the long
run as well as save renewable and non-renewable resources. If resources are
overused development will come to a standstill after a certain period of time.
Example: Groundwater is an example of renewable resources. These resources are
replenished by nature as in the case of crops and plants. However, even these
resources may be overused.
In the case of groundwater, if we use more than what is being replenished by rain
then we would be overusing this resource.
c) Non-renewable resources are those which will get exhausted after years of use
for example crude oil. We have a fixed stock on earth which cannot be replenished.
We do discover new resources that we did not know of earlier. New sources in this
way add to the stock. However, over time, even this will get exhausted.

6 What is Human Development Index? Which organization measures the HDI? 5

Explain the three major indicators of the HDI.
Human Development Index is a composite index of achievements of a nation in
terms of three important variables, namely—longevity, knowledge and standard of
living, that determine the quality of life.
Human Development Report published by UNDP (United Nation Development
Programme)
Life Expectancy at Birth: It denotes average expected length of life of a person at
the time of birth.
Mean years of schooling of people aged 25 and above.
Per Capita Income/Gross National Income per capita: It is calculated in dollars for
all countries so that it can be compared. It is calculated by dividing the total
income of a country by its total population.

7 a) Do you think that “Countries with higher income are more developed than others 4
with less income.”
Yes, to some extent I agree with this statement. It is because more income means
more of all things that human beings need. Whatever people like, and should have,
they will be able to get with greater income.

b) What is the criterion used by the world bank in classifying the countries? -
Per Capita Income.
c) Why are the middle-east countries excluded from the list of developed
countries?
Although countries of the Middle East are very rich countries due to oil reserves
and production, money alone is not an indicator of development. Along with
money, there are other aspects too like education and other social aspects like
individual freedom, democracy, gender equality which are not available in those
countries.
