Introduction

This is a step-by-step tutorial in which you learn how to prepare a Road job from data which are defined
by cross sections. At first, a LandXML file that contains alignments is imported and missing or wrong
connection problems are fixed. In a next step, a Material Surface is created and finally the created road
and the material surfaces are exported for further use in the field.

The functionality discussed in this guide requires the Infrastructure license.

The data from the following folders will be used in this tutorial:
• Data\ Final Housing Estate [EG+Design].xml contains the alignments.

1. Import LandXML data

1.1 Start Infinity and create a new project.

To import the data, select Import
from the Home ribbon bar.

1.2 To import the data, navigate to the

data directory, highlight “Final
Housing Estate [Eg+Design].xml” and
select Import.

• The imported data are shown

in the graphical view.

1.3 To view more information on what
was imported, move to the
Navigator’s Library and expand
Surfaces and Infrastructure.

• The file contains:

a. A DTM of the surveyed
terrain
b. Several alignments with
cross sections assigned
along them.

1.4 To isolate the alignments in the

graphical view, deactivate the visibility
of the surface “Ground from Survey”,
using the visibility indicator . Zoom
in to get a better view.

• Infinity has automatically

generated all the stringlines
that join the same node along
consecutive cross sections.

1.5 Each road is an independent object.

To focus on “Cervin_Way”, deactivate
the visibility for all objects listed
under Infrastructure except for
“Cervin_Way”.

1.6 To view more details for this road, drill

in the “Cervin_Way” in the Library and
in the view move to the side of the
POB and select one of the lines that
form the cross section.

• This road contains:

a. The Centerline or main axis
of the Road (“Cervin_Way”)
b. The cross sections (“Cross
Section Assignments”)
c. Stringlines grouped in
Material Layers, as defined
in the cross sections (e.g.
“Base”, “Curb”, “Pave1”,
”Pave2”, etc.).

You can use the visibility
indicators to isolate specific
objects of the road.

2. Fix missing or wrong connections

2.1 Move and zoom to cross section 0-

114.000, then highlight it.

• The connection between the

two consecutive cross sections
seems to be incorrect. To fix
this problem, we shall use the
Infrastructure Tool.

2.2 To start the Infrastructure Tool, use

the mouse to right-click over any
point of the selected cross section
and use the context menu option Edit
Connections.

• The Infrastructure Tool starts

and the selected cross section
connections are displayed.

2.3 Select the “Top” Material Layer and
move, zoom and rotate the tool’s view
to get a better view of the nodes
“Hinge_Fill:R0” and “Hinge_Cut:R0”.

2.4 Locate the mouse on node

“Hinge_Cut:R0 and use the context
menu to start linking.

2.5 Zoom in to the other cross section

and drive the mouse so that the line is
linked to node “Hinge_Fill:R0”. To
finalise the connection, use the left
mouse button.

• After the linking is complete,

the line style changes.

2.6 To apply the changes to the road,
select Apply on the bottom right side
of the tool and close the tool.

• In the main graphical view, the

connections are now fixed and
the stringlines have been
updated.

3. Create a Material Surface

3.1 To create a Material Surface for the “Top”

material layer of the “Cervin_Way” road,
highlight it in the Navigator and then
select Material Surface from the
Infrastructure ribbon bar, or right-click
for context menu.

Leica Infinity, How to prepare a Road job from data defined by cross sections 7
• A new surface is created.

3.2 Repeat the same procedure to create a

Material Surface for the “SubBase”
material layer of the “Cervin_Way” road.

• The surface is created.

4. Export the data for further use

4.1 To export the road “Cervin_Way”,

that will be staked out, highlight it in
the Navigator and then select
ExportSelection from the Home
ribbon bar.

4.2 In the Export dialog, select only

Infrastructures, Material Surfaces
and Create Subdirectory.

4.3 In the same dialog, select
SmartWorx / Captivate Job – DBX as
the export format and select Export.

The exported road can be

imported in Captivate and
can be used as Design data
to Stake/Check Road
applications.
The exported material
surface can be imported in
Captivate and can be used as
a DTM for stakeout tasks.
