Information Sheet 3.1-1

Machines Compatibility and Nomenclature

Learning Objectives:

After reading this Information Sheet, you should be able to accomplish the
following specific objectives within 34 hours:
1. Learn how to identify compatibility of prime mover and machines;

2. Learn how to determine the nomenclature of engine and machines

Introduction:

From the previous unit of competency, it is about the compatibility

and its nomenclature of machines for operating rice crop establishment
which focuses on mechanical rice seeder and rice transplanter, while this
unit of competency is all about the operating rice crop care which
focuses on irrigation pump, mechanical fertilizer applicator and
weeder/cultivator. In this unit of competency, the compatibility is focuses
on prime mover and its corresponding machines to be used. The actual
meaning of prime mover is a primary source of power. It means all the
machinery that provide power for performing different mechanical work.
Technically, it is a group of machines that transform energy from thermal,
electrical, or pressure into mechanical form for use in different sources for
some mechanical work. Engines and turbines are examples. For power
generation, three principal competitors are introduced in the field of
production of mechanical power. They are the steam turbine plant, the
diesel piston engine, and the gasoline piston engine.

Engine nomenclature explained that engines are produced with a

large number of options. Most of the information you need is included in the
engine’s name – as long as you know how to read it. The letters and
numbers that make up an engine’s model number are a series of codes to
tell you the engine family, the number of cylinders, the emissions standard,
the type of ignition, the capacity, the type of aspiration and the generator
set rating.

A machine (or mechanical device) is a mechanical structure that

uses power to apply forces and control movement to perform an intended
action. Machines can be driven by animals and people, by natural forces
such as wind and water, and by chemical, thermal, or electrical power, and
include a system of mechanisms that shape the actuator input to achieve a
specific application of output forces and movement.
The machines generating mechanical energy are also called as prime
movers. These machines convert some form of energy like heat, hydraulic,
electrical, etc into mechanical energy or work. The most popular example of
these machines is the internal combustion engine in which the chemical
energy of the fuel is converted into heat energy which in turn is converted
into mechanical work in the form of the rotation of the wheels of the vehicle.
Some other examples of this group of machines are gas turbines, water
turbines, steam engine etc. Therefore all machines are driven with prime
mover engine and electric motor depending the type and classification the
machines. Using prime mover engine are those high capacity horsepower
machine while using electric motor are those machines with low capacity
and horsepower being used.

All Irrigation Pump are water-cooled engine that has compatibility

prime mover which is a diesel driven. It was designed as diesel prime mover
in order to have a better performance on irrigation operation

The Fertilizer Applicator and Weeder/Cultivation are both air &

water cooled engine. This means that the compatibility prime mover is
both diesel and gasoline depending the horsepower capacity of the engine.
The prime mover to be used must be compatible to the machines.

Agriculture workers are often at risk of work-related injuries, lung disease,

noise-induced hearing loss, skin disease, as well as certain cancers related to
chemical use or prolonged sun exposure. On industrialized farms, injuries frequently
involve the use of agricultural machinery. The most common cause of fatal
agricultural injuries is tractor cultivator rollovers, which can be prevented by the use
of roll over protection structures which limit the risk of injury in case a tractor rolls
over.

operation) or to raise it to the required pressure head so that it can be

sprayed on the fields via piping systems.

Water pumps can work in a few different ways, but in the simplest
terms, water pumps consist of three main parts: an inlet, pump system
and an outlet.

Water is drawn into the pump though the inlet side when a pressure
difference is made within the pump system, the water wants to move from
an area of high pressure to an area of low pressure. This is used to move
the water through the pump to the outlet side, into a hose, and towards
your farm or water tank.

There are two main types of water pumps, and they are categorised in
how they create the pressure difference within the pump system. These
types are:

● Positive Displacement Water Pumps – create a pressure difference

by changing the available space (volume) within the pump system.
Using components such as; pistons, closed chambers and valves, the
pressure is decreased on the inlet side which draws water into the
pump. Then the pressure is increased forcing (displacing) the water
through the outlet side of the pump system.
● Centrifugal Water Pumps – use rotating blades, known as
impellers, which pass energy from the rotation into the water flow to
drive the water through the pump system.

Something in common with these pumps is that they need energy to work,
this energy can come from fuel or electricity, or with a bit of effort, from you
manually moving the pump parts with a lever.

To check and adjust the Irrigation Pump, the following must be done:
1. Make a habit of checking that the motor is securely bolted to its
platform. Mounting bolts can vibrate loose.
2. Check to see that rotating parts aren’t rubbing on stationary parts of
the motor, causing damage to the motor. Remember that an electric
motor is an air-cooled piece of equipment and needs all the ventilation
it can get. Excessive heat is a main cause of reduced motor life.
3. Motors also like to be dry. Keep motor windings dry by keeping pump
packing in good condition. Even if windings are pumped water can
attach to the windings and cause early failure.
4. Motors that operate at 3600 rpm experience twice as much wear as
motors operating at 1800 rpm. Regular maintenance is especially
critical for 3600 rpm motors and pumps.

The Knapsack Sprayer

Plastic Knapsack Sprayer Stainless Knapsack Sprayer

Reference: http://www.agro-tools.com/portfolio-view/16l-knapsack-stainless-
steel-sprayer/
INTRODUCTION:
Fertilizers and pesticides are broadly classified as chemicals.
Fertilizers are applied to the soil to increase the available supply of plant
nutrients—namely nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium—to promote
greater yields or better crop quality. The use of commercial fertilizers has
increased steadily over the past 50 years, with over 143 million kg being
applied to crops worldwide covering nearly 1.2 million ha of cropland.
Both fertilizers and pesticides are available in dry and liquid formulations. Uniform
distribution and proper placement of fertilizers in the soil continues to become increasingly
important as factors in producing maximum crop response at minimum cost. Chemical pesticides
have played and will continue to play a major role in the rapid advancement of agricultural
production as we enter the twenty-first century. Crop quality and yields have been improved and
the use of chemical herbicides has greatly reduced labor requirements for weed control. But the
widespread use of pesticides has resulted in some serious environmental and health problems.
These problems are of direct concern to both the user and the equipment designer. Drift from the
treated area may result in poisonous or toxic chemicals being deposited on adjacent crops intended
for either human or animal consumption. Pesticide residues can also enter the general environment
by transport out of the treated field on harvested crops, in ground water or surface runoff water,
and by wind picking up deposited materials. Improvement of application equipment and techniques
to permit the effective use of smaller dosages of chemicals and to reduce drift and harmful residues
has become increasingly important as one means of minimizing the problems associated with the
use of chemical pesticides. This article considers methods and equipment for applying fertilizers and
pesticides. Application rates for granular pesticides are low in comparison with fertilizing rates, and
distribution requirements are different, but the general problems and basic principles of the
equipment are similar. 2. Dry Fertilizer Application Methods and Equipment Dry fertilizers are
applied in connection with practically every kind of field operation performed in the production of
crops worldwide. Application methods for dry fertilizers include: (a) Broadcasting before plowing, or
placing at the plowing depth by a distributor on the plow that drops fertilizer in each furrow. (b)

Placing deep with chisel-type cultivators. (c) Broadcasting and drilling into the soil after plowing and
before planting. (d) Applying during the planting operation. (e) Side dressing on growing row crops.
(f) Drilling into established pastures and other sods with special equipment. Application rates of 225
to 560 kg ha–1 of fertilizer per treatment are common, but rates may be as high as 1100 kg ha–1. A
portion of the total amount is often broadcast and plowed under or worked into the soil prior to
planting where large amounts of fertilizer per hectare are needed for row crops.

TOPIC OF THE DAY:

A Fertilizer Applicator applies manure from a CFO to their own

property. Fertilizer material is defined to mean both commercial
agricultural fertilizer and manure from a confined feeding operation.
Most chemical fertilizers on small farms in the tropics are applied by
hand (Hopfen, 1969). Single-purpose animal-drawn fertilizer applicators are
not common, although they are commercially available and were used in
Europe and North America earlier in this century (ITDG, 1985). Reasons for
their limited use in developing countries include low levels of chemical
fertilizer application and the relative ease of broadcasting fertilizer by hand.
It is also likely to be associated with the limited adoption of precision
planting to facilitate accurate fertilizer placement in rows, and also the
economies of fertilizer use that can be obtained through application to
individual plants or stands.

Before operating the machine, the following must be done:

1. Check the condition of the knives to make sure they can penetrate the
soil adequately and distribute anhydrous ammonia evenly, and
remember to test them in the field, adapting spring pressure to current
conditions, such as soil type, soil moisture, and soil compaction.
2. Make sure that hoses and pipes are clean and free of clogs, kinks, and
leaks. Iowa Sate University researchers recommend connecting hoses
from adjacent applicator shanks to different regions around the
manifold outlet ring to improve distribution across the applicator's
swath. Also, the length of each hose from the distribution manifold to
each injection knife should be equal. Coil hoses that attach to knives
near the manifold and secure them horizontally.
3. When connecting hoses during application season, avoid introducing
ammonia into the line until necessary. Make all the connections, tighten
the bleeder valves, and then open the valves starting at the furthest
downstream valve and
4. work upstream, opening the valve at the tank that releases ammonia
into the hose last. When disconnecting hoses, start closing valves at the
upstream end and work toward the downstream end.
5. As you work with anhydrous ammonia this spring, stay upwind when
operating valves. Also, keep a 5-gallon water supply available and a 6-
ounce plastic squeeze bottle in your pocket for immediate treatment of
accidental exposures.
6. Be aware of volatilization of nitrogen (N). Losing N to volatilization is an
avoidable expense. Shallow (2-4-inch) incorporation of liquid and dry
granular N urea-containing fertilizers can reduce potential volatilization
loss. Anhydrous ammonia should be injected deeply enough to avoid
losses. If you smell or see excess vapor escaping, reset the covering
discs or "beaver tail" tabs.

A Weeder/Cultivator. A number of common weeding tools are

designed to ease the task of removing weeds from gardens and lawns. The
fulcrum head weeder has a split tip like a serpent's tongue, and a long thin
handle. ... It is designed to scrape out weeds growing in crevices, stone
walls and other deep and narrow places.
Most chemical fertilizers on small farms in the tropics are applied by

Before operating the machine, the following must be done:

1. Never operate the machine without checking that there are adequate
supplies of clean diesel, clean water and clean Foamstream® concentrate
in the appropriate tanks. The M1200 produces VERY HOT water. This
can cause serious burns and injury if used incorrectly.
2. Never point the lance at people or animals as this machine operates at
high temperature and low pressure. All personnel operating a M1200
machine must be deemed competent to do so and must be adequately
trained. A copy of the training record is available on demand.
3. Always check the M1200 for any damage before use. Damaged cables,
hoses or connections must be reported immediately, and the machine
taken out of use until repairs have been completed. Use only genuine
Weedingtech spare parts and Foamstream® consumables. This will
ensure the best performance of your machine and maintain the warranty
of the unit. The M1200 must never be modified, safety interlocks
bypassed or settings adjusted (unless specified in these guidance notes)
