PROBLEM
Rubber U-Cup seals would blow out and fail every 3-4 days in cold winter weather to 3 months service in
normal weather and operating conditions. Very labor intensive to change on the upper Coker levels,
required scaffolding manpower costs. Critical production equipment availability on duty cycles was
required or lost product risk can affect daily production goals of 120,000 barrels per day.

SOLUTION
Installed Chesterton 22K Ultraseal and material upgrade to withstand operating temperature and
pressure conditions to provide a more reliable sealing system.

SERVICE DURATION DESCRIPTION

A number of seals were damaged by operations attempting to thaw frozen lines with high temperature
steam, which exceeded the seal materials limits. All 28 required swivels (6 Coker Drums) have been
converted and none have been replaced since December, 1999.
