Who was Jules Verne?

He was a French writer considered the founder of modern science fiction literature.
He predicted with great precision in his fantastic stories the appearance of some
inventions generated by the technological advances of the 20th century, such as
television, helicopters, submarines or spaceships.
His life
Jules Gabriel Verne was born on February 8, 1828. He grew up in a wealthy family
and being the eldest of five children, Verne enjoyed a good education and as a
young man began to write narratives and stories, especially travel and adventure
stories.
At eleven years old, in love with his cousin, he ran away from home to go on a ship
that was leaving for India, with the romantic idea of bringing her a coral necklace.
His father stopped him at the last second, punished him and hit him with a whip.
After this he developed a bad relationship with his father who never supported him
in literature.
At nineteen he came to Paris to study law. At the age of twenty, he began to write
dramatic texts. He met the writer Alexander Dumas, who was one of his biggest
influences and a great friend who helped him spread his works. In 1849 he
obtained the title of lawyer, but decided to write, getting the disappointment of his
father.
Verne dedicated himself to literature despite not having financial support, which
seriously affected his health. His first works were not very successful, so he had to
work as a teacher to survive.
The success
Jules Verne met the publisher Hetzel, who was interested in his texts and
published Five Weeks in a Balloon work that launched him to success and
motivated him to continue with the theme of the adventure and fantasy novel. This
novel served as the beginning of “The Extraordinary Journeys”, a
series books written by Verne and published by Hetzel. The success of Verne's
novels was increasing and with the support of his friend and publisher Hetzel he
had great sales. Verne was a workaholic, spending days on end writing and
proofreading.
Some of his books are:
 Five Weeks in a Balloon
 Journey to the Centre of the Earth
 From the Earth to the Moon
 In Search of the Castaways
 Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea
 Round the Moon
 Floating City
 Paris in the 20th century
 Around the World in Eighty Days
 The Mysterious Island
Of Jules Verne's novels, 33 have been made into films, giving rise to a total of 95
films, not counting the television series. The novels Journey to the Center of the
Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Around the World in Eighty
Days have been adapted for the big screen several times.
His first novel was "Five Weeks in a Balloon" (1863) and his last, before his death,
"The Invasion of the Sea" (1905).
His predictions:
His visionary character allowed him to imagine machines that are part of our
technology today, from the submarine or the helicopter, to the subway and even
the internet.
In 1863 he published the novel « Paris in the 20th century », which tells the story of
a young man who lives in a city with gas cars, high-speed trains and glass
skyscrapers. In this novel, Verne talks about an international communications
network that connects different regions to share information.
In the story, "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," Verne wrote about the
Nautilus submarine. This long before submarines were used to explore the sea.
Verne gave the idea about the communication that can be had between people
who are sitting in two remote places while looking at each other. In his book "In the
year 2889", Jules Verne described the " Phonotelephote" which is similar to our
video conferencing technology.
In the first manned trip to the moon, which took place in 1968, the speed used to
leave the Earth's atmosphere was twelve kilometers per second, the same as
Verne calculated a hundred years before.
These facts could lead us to the question: could Jules Verne predict the future?
Maybe the answer was given by Verne himself in an interview, three years before
his death, when he said: "I have simply made fiction of what would later become
fact." Verne was definitely an amazing writer with an accuracy that seems unreal,
he certainly had an imagination beyond the limits.
