tutorial for crochet top named “Serena”. This is not a
line-by-line pattern, but an algorithm for making tops
with 2 options of pattern and using any yarn and for

GAUGE
For swatch make a test piece in all doubles (approximate 20x20cm or 8x8 inches),
wash it according to your yarn manufacturer’s recommendations, dry flat slightly
pulling in all directions and only after that measure. My gauge is 20 doubles in 10
cm (4 inches) and 10 rows are 10 cm (4 inches)

MAIN STEPS OF WORK.
The top is made in rows from bottom to top. Length of rows equals to bust
circumference. Then cups are formed on the front sides, the back is made, edging
and stripes are made simultaneously. Then buttons are sewn.

STEP 1. Main body.

I have 2 charts (patterns) for this top, the difference is in the size of holes: in case of
1st chart you make 11 stitches per pattern and the holes are slightly bigger, in case of
2nd chart you make 8 stitches per pattern and the holes are slightly smaller. Don’t

Step 2. Cups.
Divide your number of stitches to 2: 165/2=82 ½ (or 82 and 83 stitches as we can’t
have half a stitch). If one of the numbers is uneven, as in our case,(83) leave it for
the back piece and the other, even number, leave for cups (82). Then divide the even
number, which you’ve left for the front to 2 and this is the width of your 1 cup. See
calculations for your size further

To make even increases find your number of chains by finding Z. Z=X/Y, where
X is width of cup in stitches and
Y is height of cup in stitches according to your gauge.
Example: 41/9= 4½, this means I make 4 chains in each row of decrease FOR ALL
SIZES AND MY GAUGE. You may have another number of decreases if your gauge
differs from mine.

GENERAL PRINCIPLE OF CUP SHAPING2:

Z is your number of chains that are made in the beginning of each row . The
number of stitches you should skip to form bevel is Z minus 1. This is how it looks
schematically:

Begin 1st cup from the side where you have a free end of thread. Leave Z number of
stitches unmade in the 1st row (marked with green circles), needed to form
underarms, insert the last treble in the row into the closest chain (see chart).
The last 2 rows of cup are made in all dc only.

Second cup is made in a direction from marker to edge of front. 1st row is a little bit
different from the 1st row of cup #1: fix a thread in the 1st stitch after marker (from

STEP 4. EDGING

Edging consists of 2 rows of

singles all over the borders. You
can make more rows of edging or
substitute singles by slip stitches,
just don’t tighten them.
Make edging with half size
smaller hook or the same size
hook, depending on your gauge. I
take half size smaller.
1st row of border: fix a thread in
the bottom of the left front piece to the right side of our right hand if you lay the top
flat. Each 2 doubles of the top should be followed by 3 singles of border. Go on in
the direction towards cup. For cups proceed with 3sc in chains, 2sc in tr as shown
on the scheme:

Go on with underarm (1sc in each stitch), the back slide border is made in the same
way as on cups: 3sc in 4ch, 2sc in tr, then go on with sc in each stitch of the last row
of the back, again back slide: 3sc in 4dc, 2sc in tr, underarm (1sc in each stitch),
second cup (the same as for 1st) and for the right front piece make border with holes
for buttons, for that:
1. Mark places for buttons on the left side and the corresponding places on the
right side of the front. Top and bottom buttons should be located in 1-2
stitches from the edge, the rest 3 buttons are placed in even distance from
each other. I make 5 buttons, you’re free to make more/less if you need.
2. Sc in 1st stitch, skip 1 stitch, ch, sc in next stitch, (this is our 1st hole for
button), go on with 3sc in each 2dc
of the front until you reach next

Step 5. Stripes
Each stripe is 20-25 cm or 8-10
inches.
Fix a thread to the top of 1st cup, in a
stitch #1 on the Picture:

Narrow stripes:
Cast on 40 chains or another needed number of stitches according to your gauge
and individual measurements. Insert he hook into the 1st stitch of the back, join with

3rd stitch on cup. Cut off, hide loose ends, repeat for the 2nd stripe.

Wide stripes:
Fix a thread to the top of 1st cup, in a stitch #1 on the Picture, 3dc in stitches #1,2,3
of 1st cup.
[Ch-2, turn, 2dc in 2dc]*repeat until you reach the needed length of stripe.
The last row of stripe should be joined to the back by doubles in stitches #1,2,3 of
the back. Cut off, hide loose ends, repeat for the 2nd stripe.

Sew buttons on the left side of the front. Hide all loose ends with your favorite
method.

Wash carefully the top according to your yarn manufacturer’s recommendations,

usually it’s recommended to wash in cold water only, don’t tumble dry. Put the
washed top on a towel, roll them together and leave for 15 minutes. Dry flat slightly
blocking to measurements and away from heat and direct sunlight.
Ironing only on low temperatures.
