Electrical Eng. Department Final Examination 2008/2009

Final Year – Second term Time: 2 Hours

Answer All Questions

Q (1):
(a) Discus in details why different voltage levels in power supply system are needed. Support
your discussion with examples.
(b) What are the types of costs that power system equipments incur? Using the feeder system
explain the difference between them.
(c) When considering upgrading certain distribution system it is found that the fault level at
one of the busbars will exceeds the maximum available switch gear fault level. What could be
done to overcome this.

Q (2):
(a) Draw a simplified basic diagram for the HVDC system and explain the principle of operation..
(b) Give at lest 5 advantages and 3 disadvantages for the HVDC.
(c) Discus the concept of power system equipment overloading. Why industrial distribution system
equipments are not allowed to be over loaded by more tan 110%?

Q (3):
Give reasons for the following:-
(a) Under ground DC transmission system is recommended for submarine.
(b) DC lines are difficult to tap.
(c) Power system interconnection helps reducing generation costs.
(d) Ring distribution feeders are more reliable than radial feeder.
(e) Fault level is the most important technical factor that should be considered when designing a
distribution system to feed motors.

Q (4):
Table (1) below shows the data for industrial loads and the nearest supply voltage is 132 kV. .
(a) Without going into detailed calculation discus the Suggested Distribution System of Fig. Q (4).
(b) Suggest an alternative design and compare it to the one given in Fig. Q (4). Describe which one
you think is better and why?
