about the authors

Betsy O. Barefoot is a writer, researcher, and teacher whose special area
of scholarship is the first year of college. During her tenure at the
University of South Carolina from 1988 to 1999, she served as codirector
for research and publications at the National Resource Center for The
First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. She taught University
101, in addition to special-topics graduate courses on the first-year
experience and the principles of college teaching. She conducts first-year
seminar faculty training workshops around the United States and in other
countries, and she is frequently called on to evaluate first-year seminar
outcomes. She currently serves as Senior Scholar in the Gardner Institute
for Excellence in Undergraduate Education. In that role she works with
both two- and four-year campuses to evaluate all components of the first
year especially first-year seminars.

La signora Pasqua, nel pronunciar queste gravi parole, non
s’immaginava che il professore meditava appunto lo scandalo ch’ella
non avrebbe perdonato a Tocci.
Erano trascorse due settimane dalla serata del teatro, nè la contessa
Giorgina aveva più soggiunto una sillaba sul delicato argomento
della sua visita. Dal canto suo il professore non osava interrogarla;
cercava bensì che ne’ suoi occhi ci fosse la domanda che non osava
salirgli alle labbra, ma non avrebbe potuto dire s’ella lo capiva o se
voleva capirlo. Già, eravamo alle solite; ch’aveva sempre intorno a
sè uno sciame d’oziosi, e, per quella sua benedetta fissazione
d’esser cortese con tutti quanti, i vecchi amici si trovavano allo
stesso livello dei nuovi arrivati. Teofoli non andava da lei senza
dover subirsi una o due presentazioni. Il conte tale, il marchese tal
altro. Bravissimi giovani piovuti dalle nuvole che a sentir il suo nome
borghese chinavano appena la testa e a cui non passava neppure in
mente che quel nome potess’essere più rispettabile e più conosciuto
del loro. Che tirocinio d’umiltà deve fare un uomo d’ingegno allorchè
si mette a corteggiare una donna galante!
Nondimeno, Teofoli era rassegnato a questo genere di mortificazioni.
Ne avrebbe subìto in pace anche di maggiori se avesse potuto
acquistar la certezza che la Serlati gli voleva un po’ di bene. Ma
perchè quel contegno enigmatico? Perchè quel silenzio ostinato
circa alla sua visita? Gliel’aveva o non gliel’aveva promessa? E
come si può dimenticar così una promessa?
Ebbene, una sera nel venir via dalla conversazione dei Roncagli e
proprio nel momento che il professore inghiottiva tanto veleno
pensando alle paroline, ai sorrisi, alle occhiate che la contessa
aveva scambiato fino allora con Montalto e con due o tre giovani
ufficiali, ella colse un pretesto qualunque per avvicinarglisi e gli
susurrò all’orecchio: — Aspettatemi domani, al tocco e mezzo.
Si pose il dito sulla bocca per intimargli silenzio, e senz’attender
risposta diede il braccio a Montalto che l’accompagnò giù della scala
fino alla carrozza.
Neppur volendo, Teofoli non avrebbe potuto rispondere. Era
sbalordito, ammutolito, con la testa in combustione; sarebbe stato
incapace di esprimere quel che provava. O fors’era simile al soldato
che, dopo aver mostrato una grande impazienza di battersi, sente
raddoppiar le pulsazioni del cuore nel vedere il nemico, e non è ben
sicuro che quelle pulsazioni sian figlie tutte d’uno schietto
entusiasmo.
