I dedicate my work in this third edition to the memory of Carmeli and Juan José.
Olga Gallego Smith
I became interested in the field of second language teaching and learning when
I was hired as a language teaching assistant at Dickinson College. Later on, I
went to graduate school at Penn State University, where I earned my Ph.D. in
the field of Applied Linguistics. My research in this field as well as the hundreds
of language students that I have taught have inspired my current approach to
teaching, an approach that prompts the following comments from my students:
“She makes her students feel comfortable speaking in class (even if we make tons
of mistakes).”
Concepción B. Godev
I dedicate this work to my family and my students.
I dedicate the third edition of Más allá to Gregory and Lauren, hispanophiles /
hispanophones.
Graduated learning and a smooth transition to the second year of language study
Instructors of second-year Spanish face a variety of preparation levels among students in their classes,
and an intermediate textbook cannot assume that all students have retained and assimilated first-
year structures and skills. Más allá de las palabras helps all students succeed in second year by
first reviewing familiar themes and communicative functions in chapters 1–5 and then introducing
increasingly sophisticated functions in chapters 6–10.
Preface ix
Subsequent activities gradually build to more open-ended practice in which students create with
the language. As a result, students are able to perform complex speaking and writing tasks without
feeling overwhelmed.

CHAPTER ORGANIZATION
Más allá de las palabras is theme-based in chapters 1 through 5, and chapters 6 through 10 develop a theme
in the context of a region of the Spanish-speaking world. The chapters, subdivided into three Temas, contain
the following sections:
Lectura or Miniconferencia
Temas 1 and 3 begin with a photo-illustrated text that introduces and develops a theme related to life in
the Spanish-speaking world. Pre-reading activities emphasize the activation of background knowledge
and the development of reading strategies with an emphasis on vocabulary building. Post-reading
activities integrate the theme into written and oral communicative practice and reinforce vocabulary.
Some activities call for individual completion while others require working in pairs or groups. Tema 2
begins with a mini-lecture (Miniconferencia) that features pre- and post-listening activities.
Gramática
This section provides concise and user-friendly grammatical explanations in English with examples
in Spanish drawn from the readings or the chapter’s cultural theme. The explanation is followed
by activities designed to move students gradually from controlled to more open-ended and creative
practice. At least one grammar activity is supported by a list of Vocabulario esencial containing words
and phrases students need to complete the designated task. The Grammar Reference section at the
end of the book provides support for students to review first-year grammar topics, and grammatical
information that goes beyond the material presented in the chapter. WileyPLUS features animated
grammar tutorials that offer students a clear, step-by-step review of all grammar points.
Curiosidades
In Temas 1 and 2, this enjoyable section includes music, jokes, recipes, games, fun activities, and tests
integrated with the chapter’s themes. Curiosidades provides continuing opportunities for language use
in the context of lighter material.
Color y forma
In Tema 3 students observe a work of art and, through speaking or writing activities, express their
reactions. Each work reflects a thematic connection to the chapter.
Preface xi
end of chapter material
Each chapter ends with a section called Más allá de las palabras subdivided as follows:
Redacción
This section takes a process-oriented approach to the development of writing skills. Writing
assignments include a variety of text types from description and narration to exposition and
argumentation. Each step in the process assists the intermediate writer in generating a clear writing
plan and organizing and expressing ideas in a coherent manner.
Ven a conocer
This section presents a site of interest in the Spanish-speaking world. Ven a conocer offers interactive
pre- and post-reading activities and stimulates students’ interest in traveling to the area and/or
exploring it in more depth on the Internet through a suggested Viaje virtual.
Videoteca
The textbook briefly describes the themes of two video segments available in WileyPLUS. Instructors
or students can download the accompanying activity, which contains pre-viewing, while viewing,
and post-viewing exercises. Video segments and accompanying activities provide additional cultural
content and listening practice.
Vocabulario
Every chapter ends with a complete list of vocabulary from readings, the miniconferencia, and
Vocabulario esencial. All items also appear in the G
lossary at the end of the book.
LESSON PLANNING
xii Preface
section in each Tema is designed to activate background knowledge, encourage students to anticipate
the Tema’s topic, and acquire necessary vocabulary before reading or listening. Post-reading or
listening activities scaffold from simple comprehension to more complex interactive pair and group
tasks. Textbook grammar activities begin with recognition and identification and move to interaction
as students use the grammar to communicate ideas related to the theme of each Tema. The Activities
Manual provides homework practice in reading, writing and listening for the individual student;
various mechanical exercises reinforce vocabulary and grammar, and open-ended activities require
reflective writing and cultural comparison.

kaikkien palvelijaksi evankeliumin mukaisesti.
jonka rakentajat hylkäsivät, on tullut kulmakiveksi.» Mutta pilkkaajilta
voisi kysyä itseltään: jos me haaveilemme, niin milloin te sitten
pystytätte oman rakennuksenne ja järjestätte olonne
oikeudenmukaisesti pelkällä järjellänne ilman Kristusta? Jos he
He

Ruumiin haju
Pappismunkki isä Zosima vainajan ruumis valmisteltiin kuntoon
muotoon. Kuolleen päähän hän pani päähineen, jossa oli
kahdeksankärkinen risti. Päähine oli jätetty avoimeksi, mutta
vainajan kasvot peitettiin mustalla ehtoolliskalkkiliinalla. Hänen
käsiinsä pantiin Vapahtajan kuva. Tässä asussa hänet asetettiin
ruumisarkkuun (joka oli varattu jo paljon aikaisemmin). Arkku aiottiin
jättää kammioon (etumaiseen isoon huoneeseen, samaan, jossa
vaikuttavaan parantavaan voimaan, joka, kuten he uskoivat, aivan
Kohdatessaan
kiihtymyksen valtaan joutuneita munkkeja isä Paísi alkoi suorastaan
nuhdella heitä: »Jonkin suuren asian odottaminen tuolla tavoin ja
näin heti», puhui hän, »on kevytmielisyyttä, jommoinen on
mahdollinen vain maailmanlasten keskuudessa, mutta ei sovi
meille».
esimerkiksi aina puolen tunnin kuluttua, kaikesta mitä tapahtuu.
kaukaisimmassa nurkassa aidan luona istumassa erään jo kauan
sitten kuolleen sankariteoistaan kuulun munkin hautakivellä. Hän
istui selin erakkomajaan, kasvot aitaan päin ja ikäänkuin piilossa
muistomerkin takana.
