Chapter 1 Preface

Liebert.PEX+ chilled water series precision air conditioner (“Chilled water AC” for short hereafter) is professional
equipment and is applicable to the site that is not accessible by common public.
The Liebert.PEX+ chilled water series is a medium-large size precision environmental control system, which is
developed based on the Global R&D Platform of Emerson Network Power Co., Ltd (“Emerson” for short hereafter). It is
specially designed to meet the special requirement of data center environment. It has a wide range of cooling capacity
from 30kW to 210kW which is available for big, middle and small data centers.
This chapter mainly introduces the special requirement of data center environment and the features and advantages
of the Liebert.PEX+.

1.1 Special Requirement Of Data Center Environment

Precision environment control is critical to computer operation, so the computer has strict requirements on the data
center environment. These requirements cannot be satisfied by common civil air conditioner that is designed for
comfortableness, and comprises the following 4 aspects:
1. Temperature control
The operation of computers and exchanges generates a large amount of heat, whose density is 6 ~ 10 times larger
than that in common offices. In order to optimize the computer equipment performance, the optimum temperature of

data center is 22 25°C.So the air conditioner must have sufficient cooling capacity and quick regulating and
controlling ability to prevent sharp change of the temperature. Such requirements are beyond the ability of common
civil air conditioner.
2. Humidity control
Too high or too low humidity will damage the computers in data center. Too high humidity will condense the moisture in
the computers to short or damage the computer hardware. When the humidity is too low, the static accumulated in the
data center will make the computer unable to work or even crash. The common civil air conditioner cannot control the
humidity within the required range.
3. Air flow / cleanness control
The computers and exchanges generate a large amount of sensible heat during operating. To dissipate the heat, the
air conditioner should provide sufficient cooling cycle airflow and long blowing distance.
4. Operation all year round
The common civil air conditioner (cooling operation) is always used in summer, for 8h ~ 10h each day. But the data
center air conditioner is required to work all the time throughout the year, and even in the winter when the outdoor
temperature is as low as -35°C.

1.2 Liebert.PEX+ Professional Air Conditioner Used In Data Center

The precise temperature & humidity control and reliability design can fully meet the special environment of data center.
The comparisons between the Chilled water AC and common civil air conditioner are listed in Table 1-1.
1. Precise temperature & humidity control
The temperature and humidity of the Chilled water AC can set to ±1°C and ±1%RH respectively. The Emerson
Micro-processing controller uses advanced fuzzy control and PID regulation technologies. The intelligent
micro-processing control technology can monitor the temperature change of data center and take actions prior to the
change, instead of passively responding to the current environment change.
2. Security and reliability
The data center air conditioner runs 24h a day due to the special requirement of the computer, so the reliability is
especially important. The advanced micro-processing system of the Chilled water AC can control the system
automatically and minimize the faults. The perfect automatic alarm and diagnosis functions can protect the unit from
malfunctions, and locate the faults quickly, prolonging the system life span.
3. High performance

Chapter 5 Instruction Of Application 19

Chapter 5 Instruction Of Application

This chapter describes the piping for refrigerant tubing system of water system and wind system and the connection of
controller.

5.1 Water system

5.1.1 System Arrangement

The general layout of the chilled water air conditioner is shown in Figure 5-1.

Figure 5-1 General layout diagram

5.1.2 General principles

Water pressure should be able to overcome the water pressure drop caused by all the components of water system.
Considering the possibility that water pressure drop would increase due to incrustant and impurities resulting from
long-time running of the system, when choosing the head components (e.g. pump), we should consider making
redundancy. The following principles can be referred to when connecting the pipe:
Chilled water in pipes should be equipped with the water filter (1mm mesh) and several isolating valves. One of the
isolating valves can be balance valve. And it is suggested to install pressure gauge for the in and out pipes, so as to
adjust the flow rate through the actual pressure drop.

5.1.3 Pipe Layout

Piping can be arranged by referring to Figure 5-2. The AC unit has reserved space for pipes at the bottom and on the
side, which can be selected according to the construction layout for installation.

5.2 Duct System

5.2.1 General Principle

The unit of the Chilled water AC is classified into upflow and downflow as shown in Figure 5-4 by the airflow mode. For
the connection of the upflow system, the duct or plenum can be used. It should be considered synthetically for duct
connection. Please refer to the following principles for installing ducts.
1. The ratio between long side and short side of the rectangular duct shall not exceed 4:1.
2. The arc or slash rectangular bend can be adopted for the elbow bend of the rectangular duct. The flow deflector is
required, if the side length is equal to or longer than 500mm.
3. The reinforcing measurement is required, if the side length of the rectangular duct is equal to or longer than 630 mm,
the side length of heat insulating duct is equal to or longer than 800mm and the length of duct is longer than 1200 mm.
4. The exterior of duct and its accessories should be smooth. Their arcs should be even, and the gap of joints should
be sealed. The joints and the regulating device of duct and its accessories cannot be fitted on the wall or in the ceiling.
5. The sealed test of duct must be in accordance with the norms of air leak check with lighting.

5.2.2 Pipe Layout

When several air conditioner units are connected with the same plenum chamber, try to reduce or even avoid the
interference of outlet airflow between air conditioner units. Pay special attention to it when connecting the pipes.

5.3 Controller

5.3.1 Electrical Installation

Please refer to User Manuals.

5.3.2 Multi-Units And Teamwork Modes

The teamwork mode can be realized for the air conditioner units through network connection and networking
configurations.
Networking
The control boards can be networked via CAN, and the control board and large graphic display can be connected via
directly connected network cable. Up to 32 units and up to 32 large graphic displays can be connected together by
using the Global Bus Protocol, as shown in Figure 5-5.

Liebert.PEX+ Chilled Water Series Air Conditioner Technical Manual

22 Chapter 5 Instruction Of Application

Figure 5-5 Networking of multiple units with multiple displays

Teamwork parameters
After connecting the hardware, networking can be realized after corresponding parameters are set through the display
board.
TEAMWORK: Available modes are single mode, teamwork mode 1, teamwork mode 2, and teamwork mode 3.
#UNIT: The unit number in teamwork mode
#STANDBY: The number of standby units in teamwork mode
CASCADE: Whether the cascade mode is enabled
ROT BY: The number of rotation units
DO ROT: Perform one rotation manually
ROTATION: The time for realizing one automatic rotation
 ROT TIME: The rotation time
 Note
Control board address shall be set via DIP switch and the address of display board shall be set via menus.
The address must be allocated starting from 0, and #0 unit is the master unit.
The IP address of all units in the same network cannot be same.

5.3.3 Teamwork mode

Following teamwork modes are available for the units in one group in one network.
Single mode
All units are working independently; no parameters are shared; and standby unit and rotation unit cannot be
configured, and cascading function is disabled. The unit calculates the request according to its measured temperature
and humidity and runs solely. So the fighting operation (cooling / heating, humidifying / dehumidifying) may happen.
Teamwork mode 0
Some parameters are shared (temperature and humidity setting value and precision, dead band). If setting in any of
the units, all other units will follow with the same settings. The master unit does not send request command to slave
units. This mode is used in the occasions with an even heat load distribution and may cause fighting operation.
Standby and rotation are enabled in teamwork mode 0, but cascade is not supported.
Teamwork mode 1
Some parameters are shared (temperature and humidity setting value and precision, dead band). If setting in any of
the units, all other units will follow with the same settings. The master unit will send request command to slave units.
This mode is used in the occasions with an uneven heat load distribution
Standby, rotation and cascade are enabled in teamwork mode 1.

Liebert.PEX+ Chilled Water Series Air Conditioner Technical Manual

Chapter 5 Instruction Of Application 23

Teamwork mode 2
Some parameters are shared (temperature and humidity setting value and precision, dead band). If setting in any of
the units, all other units will follow with the same settings. The master unit does not send request command to slave
units. This mode is used in the occasions with an uneven heat load distribution and will not cause fighting operation.
Standby is enabled in teamwork mode 2, but rotation and cascade are not supported.
Teamwork mode 3
Some parameters are shared (temperature and humidity setting value and precision, dead band). If setting in any of
the units, all other units will follow with the same settings. The master unit does not send request command to slave
units. This mode is used in the occasions with a severe uneven heat load distribution and will not cause fighting
operation. Standby and cascade are enabled in teamwork mode 3, but rotation is not supported.
 Note
Prior to entering standby mode, units will operate the fan only for a time of 3 minutes to cool down the electric heater and
remove steam out of the unit.

1) Typical standby (reserved) function

This function can be performed in all teamwork modes.
One or more units can be defined to be standby and the normal status of standby-units is standby off (fan off).
The standby function can be rotated daily (setting the time), weekly (setting the day of the week and time) or monthly
(setting the first weekday of the month and time).
2) Standby & cascade
Cascade is possible in teamwork mode 1 only.
In normal condition, the standby units will start in case of switching (rotation switching and alarm switching). If standby
units are cascaded, they will also start in order to “help” the regular units, if the temperature or humidity runs out of
range, before a high or low temperature / humidity occurs.

5.3.4 Comparision
The comparison between the teamwork modes is listed in Table 5-2. The rotation and cascade function is based on
the standby function. No standby, no rotation or cascade.

5.4 Application FAQ

Q1: How do we recommend when to use teamwork – if customers just try it and see what happens?

A1: The rule is simple:

Multi-zones inside one room: teamwork mode 0.

Balanced load (small groups of units inside the same environment: teamwork 1.

Unbalanced load (not all units will have the same load in large equipment rooms): teamwork 2/3.

Q2: Which control mode do we recommend to set the temperature and humidity in teamwork mode?

A2: You had better to select proportional band.

Q3: Will all units in same group select the same teamwork mode?

A3: Yes. All units in same group must select the same teamwork mode.

Q4: May the standby units in teamwork mode 1 turn on if an operating unit is in "alarm" condition and has been shut
down?

A4: Yes. As soon as an operating unit does not operate (because of an alarm or switched off), the standby unit will
start immediately in order to keep the number of operating units.

Q5: Do all of the networked units have the same proportional band, dead band and set point?

A5: In teamwork modes 1, 2 and 3, these parameters are the same. Changing one of these three parameters will be
automatically taken over from all connected units.

Q6: How do the cascade units participate in system calculating in teamwork mode 1?

A6: The master averages from the temperature and humidity of operating units and comprises them with the set points
to calculate the request. Then the calculated request is multiplied by the usable unit number in system to get the
total request. The request is allocated to the operating units firstly. If there are remaining, it is the standby units’
turn.
