Chapter 1 Preface
Liebert.PEX+ chilled water series precision air conditioner (“Chilled water AC” for short hereafter) is professional
equipment and is applicable to the site that is not accessible by common public.
The Liebert.PEX+ chilled water series is a medium-large size precision environmental control system, which is
developed based on the Global R&D Platform of Emerson Network Power Co., Ltd (“Emerson” for short hereafter). It is
specially designed to meet the special requirement of data center environment. It has a wide range of cooling capacity
from 30kW to 210kW which is available for big, middle and small data centers.
This chapter mainly introduces the special requirement of data center environment and the features and advantages
of the Liebert.PEX+.
The Liebert.PEX chilled water series air conditioner adopts electric water flow regulating valve to precisely adjust the
chilled water flow according to the cooling demand, rendering high reliability. High efficient EC fan is used, featuring
energy saving, space saving, low noise and elaborate structure design. For downflow unit, the solution of air supply by
putting fan unit under floor is designed, which can significantly improve the efficiency of air supply. The efficient finned
tube evaporator and the unique V shape layout effectively increase the heat exchange efficiency. Special branch
design and verification have been conducted for each model to ensure the even distribution of chilled water in each
loop and make full use of the heat exchanger. The precise system matching design can maximize the performance of
the entire system.

This chapter introduces the appearance, model description, features, standard and optional components of the Chilled
water AC.
2.2 Appearance
The unit of the Chilled water AC is shown in Figure 2-1 with P3180UC series unit as an example.
2.3 Features
1. Type diversification
The Chilled water AC is classified into upflow type and downflow type by the airflow mode. The diversified modes can
adjust to different installation modes and using environments.
2. Precision control
The Liebert.PEX chilled water series air conditioner can have precise temperature and humidity control. Temperature
can be configured at ±1 ºC, and humidity can be configured at ±1%RH.
The Liebert.PEX chilled water series air conditioner adopts unique V shape finned tube heat exchanger, precisely
designed flow path and more rationalized internal layout to realize smooth and even internal air flow and more rational
chilled water distribution, thus greatly improving the heat exchange efficiency of the heat exchanger and realizing high
efficiency of the air conditioner.
3. Convenience and durability
Durable components, compact structure and low profile design; unique frame is not only stable and firm but can also
dismantled easily for transportation in extreme conditions; contributing to good insulation performance; the structure
components of one bay, two bay and three bay with high generality can greatly reduce the specifications of some
consumable components (such as Filter).
4. High efficient EC fan
High efficient EC fan is used, featuring energy saving, space saving, low noise and elaborate structure design. For
downflow unit, the solution of air supply by putting fan unit under floor is designed, which can significantly improve the
efficiency of air supply.
5. Infrared humidification
The Chilled water AC adopts an advanced infrared humidification technology to effectively reduce the dependence on
water quality. The humidity control will be more precise and quicker.
6. Multiple protections
Perfect automatic alarm and diagnosis functions provide all-around protections for the air conditioner unit, effectively
prevent faults, locate the faults more quickly and ultimately prolong the life span of the system.
7. Easy maintenance
The unit adopts front door access design. The maintenance of all the components can be performed through front
access, thus saving the operating space.
Heat exchanger
Finned-tube heat exchanger with high heat emission efficiency is adopted. The fins are hydrophilic fins with windows
and high heat exchange efficiency. The model-specific distributions can ensure the even flow path of chilled water in
each loop and greatly improve the efficiency of the heat exchanger.
Fan
High efficient and high reliable EC fan is used as shown in Figure 2-2, featuring big airflow, long airflow distance, easy
disassembly and convenient maintenance. The overheat protecting device can protect the motor effectively. The
advanced airflow loss protection can sense reduce of airflow that results from abnormal operation of the belt or motor
and stop the refrigeration, heating or humidifying, and generate the alarm signal in the meantime.
Infrared humidifier
The infrared humidifier (as shown in Figure 2-3) is controlled by a microprocessor. It features simple structure and
easy for disassembly, cleaning and maintenance. The quartz light, hanged over the moistening water pan of stainless
steel, generates the infrared ray and far infrared ray. In 5 ~ 6 seconds, these rays make the water molecule absorb the
radiation to cast off the strain of water and evaporate in the state of purity. The application of infrared humidifier
reduces the dependence on water quality. The function of automatic swashing makes the water pan cleaner.
PTC heater
The aluminum sheet mechanical gripper thermistor PTC heater is used, as shown in Figure 2-4. It features fast
temperature rising speed, automatic regulation of air temperature and power consumption, safety and reliability. The
heat quantity not only keeps the dry bulb temperature, but also compensates the temperature drop caused by
dehumidifying. The lower surface temperature of heater element can prevent the air from forming ionization and
prolong its using life.
LCD screen
The micro-processing controller of the Chilled water AC adopts 240 × 128 dot matrix, blue backlight LCD screen to
display the present temperature, humidity, temperature and humidity setting values, unit output percentage graph (fan,
compressor, refrigeration, heating, dehumidification, and humidification) and alarm information. You can browse or set
all setting values, event records, graph data, sensor data and alarm setting through the main menus on the screen.
The backlight of LCD screen is designed for saving energy. If there is not key operation over some time (the factory
default is 5 minutes, configured by the menu), the backlight will be off. Once any key is pressed, the backlight is on.
Micro-processing controller
The advanced micro-processing controller enables the Chilled water AC to control the temperature and humidity of the
machine room accurately. Its features are as follows:
Easy operation interface, multiple password protection to prevent unlawful operation.
The controller has the restoration of a power-down and high, low voltage protection functions.
Getting the operating time of important components through menu operation.
Malfunction diagnosis system of expert class can automatically display the present malfunction information to

temperature alarm, low temperature alarm, high humidity alarm, low humidity alarm, high pressure alarm, low pressure
alarm, high air discharge temperature and low air discharge temperature, coil frost, Filter blockage alarm, no air flow
alarm and some self-defined alarms.
Upflow plenum
The plenum of the same size with the unit can be selected for upflow system. All plenums have grilles to make the air
flow even. You also can regulate the grills manually for different air direction. See Table 4-4 Plenum Dimensions for
plenum dimensions.
Analog water leakage alarm
The area mode or dot mode leak detector can supply units or a stand-alone monitoring system with analog alarm
signal to trigger the alarm of air conditioner unit and cut the humidify system. The zoster leakage alarm can accurately
show the location of water leakage.
Smoke and fire detectors
The smoke detector can trigger the alarm system at once and turn off the unit when smoke is detected. The fire
detector can monitor the field return air temperature. Once it detects high temperature, it will cut off the air conditioner
unit at once. Both detectors are indispensable to some key data centers.
High efficient Filter
The Filter with high efficiency is applicable to the environment requiring the higher air cleanliness.
Electrode humidifier
The electrode humidifier uses electrodes to boil the water in humidifier tank to produce steam to achieve the
humidifying purpose.

Teamwork parameters
After connecting the hardware, networking can be realized after corresponding parameters are set through the display
board.
TEAMWORK: Available modes are single mode, teamwork mode 1, teamwork mode 2, and teamwork mode 3.
#UNIT: The unit number in teamwork mode
#STANDBY: The number of standby units in teamwork mode
CASCADE: Whether the cascade mode is enabled
ROT BY: The number of rotation units
DO ROT: Perform one rotation manually
ROTATION: The time for realizing one automatic rotation
ROT TIME: The rotation time
Note
Control board address shall be set via DIP switch and the address of display board shall be set via menus.
The address must be allocated starting from 0, and #0 unit is the master unit.
The IP address of all units in the same network cannot be same.
Teamwork mode 2
Some parameters are shared (temperature and humidity setting value and precision, dead band). If setting in any of
the units, all other units will follow with the same settings. The master unit does not send request command to slave
units. This mode is used in the occasions with an uneven heat load distribution and will not cause fighting operation.
Standby is enabled in teamwork mode 2, but rotation and cascade are not supported.
Teamwork mode 3
Some parameters are shared (temperature and humidity setting value and precision, dead band). If setting in any of
the units, all other units will follow with the same settings. The master unit does not send request command to slave
units. This mode is used in the occasions with a severe uneven heat load distribution and will not cause fighting
operation. Standby and cascade are enabled in teamwork mode 3, but rotation is not supported.
Note
Prior to entering standby mode, units will operate the fan only for a time of 3 minutes to cool down the electric heater and
remove steam out of the unit.
5.3.4 Comparision
The comparison between the teamwork modes is listed in Table 5-2. The rotation and cascade function is based on
the standby function. No standby, no rotation or cascade.

Balanced load (small groups of units inside the same environment: teamwork 1.
Unbalanced load (not all units will have the same load in large equipment rooms): teamwork 2/3.
Q2: Which control mode do we recommend to set the temperature and humidity in teamwork mode?
Q3: Will all units in same group select the same teamwork mode?
A3: Yes. All units in same group must select the same teamwork mode.
Q4: May the standby units in teamwork mode 1 turn on if an operating unit is in "alarm" condition and has been shut
down?
A4: Yes. As soon as an operating unit does not operate (because of an alarm or switched off), the standby unit will
start immediately in order to keep the number of operating units.
Q5: Do all of the networked units have the same proportional band, dead band and set point?
A5: In teamwork modes 1, 2 and 3, these parameters are the same. Changing one of these three parameters will be
automatically taken over from all connected units.
Q6: How do the cascade units participate in system calculating in teamwork mode 1?
A6: The master averages from the temperature and humidity of operating units and comprises them with the set points
to calculate the request. Then the calculated request is multiplied by the usable unit number in system to get the
total request. The request is allocated to the operating units firstly. If there are remaining, it is the standby units’
turn.
