Chords are combinations of three or more notes. They sound like a “musical background” for the melody.

Major and minor chords are named according to their root note, which in the root position shown here is always the lowest note in the
chord.
Above this fundamental note there are two more notes at an interval of consecutive thirds.
The major and minor chords differ from each other only in the “middle note of the "traffic light”: The minor chord has the middle note
one semitone below the note of the major chord.

The addition “7” means that a seventh is added to the triad. This note may be omitted.
