Under Seth Shiv Narayan Birla (1857)

 1857: Founded cotton-trading operations in Pilani, Rajasthan, India.

Under Ghanshyamdas Birla (GD Birla)

 1919: Established the first jute mill in Calcutta.


 1922-1947:
o 1922: Set up Kesoram Cotton in Calcutta.
o 1927: Acquired Hindustan Times.
o 1931: Established Upper Ganges Sugar factory.
o 1945: Built Saurashtra Chemicals in Gujarat.
o 1947: Founded Grasim Industries (Grasim).

Under Basant Kumar Birla (GD Birla's successor and transitional phase)

 1958-1962:
o 1958: Incorporated Hindalco.

o 1969: Set up Indo-Thai Synthetics Company Limited in Thailand.
o 1973: Established P.T. Elegant Textile in Indonesia.
o 1977: Pan Century Edible Oils in Malaysia.

o 1980: Set up a carbon black plant in Thailand.
o 1982: P.T. Indo Bharat Rayon, Indonesia.
o 1985: Indo Gulf Fertilisers Limited.

o 1994: Vikram Ispat set up to produce Sponge Iron.

Under Kumar Mangalam Birla (KM Birla)

 1995 onwards:
o 1995: Joint venture with American Telephone and Telegraph Corporation
(AT&T) for telecommunications.
o 1996: Launched corporate identity and 'Rising Sun' logo. Introduced new HR
policies, including external recruitment and a performance appraisal system.
o 1998: Consolidation of cement manufacturing divisions and entry into Canada
through a pulp mill joint venture with Tembec Inc.
o 1999: Implemented a 360-degree feedback program and launched Aditya Birla
Scholarships and Awards.
o 2000: E-business entry through Birla Software and Consultancy Services (BCSS)
alliance with Lawson Software.
o 2000: Hindalco acquired Indal.
o 2000: Joint venture in telecom with Tata Group.
o 2000: Indian Rayon acquired Madura Garments' international brand rights.
o 2001: Acquired PSI Data Systems.
o 2002: Joint venture with NGK of Japan.
o 2002: Divested stake in Mangalore Refineries to ONGC.
o 2003: Incorporated Liaoning Birla Carbon in China.
o 2004: Acquired controlling stake in Larsen & Toubro's cement business.
