Techniques used in Case Profile


Case Profile: A case profile employs multiple methods for collecting information such as
interview,observation and psychological tests from a variety of respondents who in some way or the
other might be associated with the case and can providesome useful information.

Methods Used

Interview

An interview involves a face to face dialogue for the purpose of obtaining information, establishing a
‘diagnosis, assessing interpersonal behavior, and personality characteristics or counseling the individual.

Interviews are conducted to study opinions, attitudes and social facts and are sometimes taken over the
phone as well.

An interview can be structured/standardized and unstructured/non standardized.

An interview can be from individual to individual, individual to group, group to individual and group to
group.

Experiment

An experiment involves a series of observations conducted under controlled conditions to investigate


the cause effect relationship between selected variables.

The effect of the presence of independent variable on the dependent variable is studied using
experimental and control groups.

Observation

An observation is an intentional examination and recording of an object or process as it occurs.

An observation method employed to describe behavior is carried out in the following steps:

1) Selection: where a particular behavior is selected for observation


2) Recording:the behavior is recorded using different methods like notes,photographs etc.
3) Analysis of Data: the observed and recorded material is analyzed in order to derive some
meaning out of it.

An observation can be conducted in a naturalistic or controlled laboratory condition. It can take the
form of a participant or a non participant observation.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS
A psychological test is a standardized and objective measure of a sample of a person’s behavior.

They are conducted for the purpose of assessment of individual differences.

Tests can be verbal,non verbal and performance tests.

They can be administered individually or to an entire group at a time.

QUESTIONNAIRE

The questionnaire is the most common,simple, versatile and low cost self report method of collecting
interpretation. It consists of a set of predetermined open ended questions or close ended questions.

CAESE STUDY

Case studies provide a narrative or detailed descriptions of the events that take place in a person’s life.

It employs multiple methods for collecting information as the emphasis is given on in depth study of a
particular case.

It is a valuable research tool in the field of clinical psychology and human development.
