Use the case study to answer the following questions. (25 marks)

Mr. Mwakinyuke 77-year-old retired engineer. He is 168cm tall and hospitalized weighs 171 pounds
(162 pounds IBW). He is sedentary due to suffering with stroke, which left him left-sided paralysis, and
he is having dysphagia. After trying Enteral Nutrition support he was not showing any improvement and
the food eliminated as it ingested which caused him unable to meet his nutritional needs via oral intake at
this time. But after several days of treatments dietician tried oral sips and the respond was positive. After
one month of treatments he was conscious and full awake with GCS of 15/15.

Answer the following questions:

a. What is hospitalized body weight and Ideal body weight of Mr. Mwakinyuke. (2 marks)
b. Calculate the Body Mass Index of Mwakinyuke.(1 mark)
c. Identify the nutritional status of Mr. Mwakinyuke(1 mark)
d. According to nutritional status and activity level of Mr. Mwakinyuke estimate calories
requirement (1 mark)
e. With reason(s) identify mode of nutrition appropriate for Mr. Mwakinyuke during early
time of treatment when EN responded well.(3 marks)
f. With reason(s) identify mode of nutrition during the time where the EN not respondent
well.(3marks)
g. What are the two advantages and disadvantages of the mode of nutrition you selected in
e and f?(4 marks)
h. Mr. Mwakinyuke’s physician is hopeful that the patient swallowing ability will improve
in the coming month. Which feeding route would be most appropriate for Mr.
Mwakinyuke at this time when his GCS was 15/15? Give reason for your answer.

i. Through ypur answer in question h use Harris Benedicts method calculate the patient
calories, carbohydrate protein and fats requirements (8 marks)
