a. The first key element of Linehan’s Biosocial Theory is that individuals with BPD are
often challenging as infants and children and may be more emotionally sensitive and
impulsive than other children. Secondly, these children are at especially high risk when
they are reared in an invalidating environmental context that rejects and mislabels
emotions while, at the same time, intermittently punishing and reinforcing extreme
emotional outbursts. Finally, the relationship between child and parent is characterized by
“poorness of fit” where the child may be passionate in a stoic family or overly intense in
a family that strives to be perfect.
