88) The farther someone is from a light source, the less intense its light. The equation I = approximates the
4d2
light intensity from a certain light source at a distance of d meters, where I is measured in watts per square
meter. Find I for d = 2 meters and interpret the result.
25
A) = 1.5625; the intensity is 1.5625 W/m 2 at 2 m.
16
25
B) = 6.25; the intensity is 6.25 W/m 2 at 2 m.
4
25
C) = 12.5; the intensity is 12.5 W/m 2 at 2 m.
2
25
D) = 25; the intensity is 25 W/m 2 at 2 m.

Answer: C
164) If P dollars are deposited every 4 weeks in an account paying an annual interest rate r expressed as a decimal,
then the amount A in the account after 2 years can be approximated by
r 26 r
A= P 1+ -P ÷
13 13
Use a calculator to evaluate the expression when r = 0.024 (2.4%) and P = $200. Interpret the result.
A) About $5212.02; if $200 is deposited every 4 wk in an account paying 2.4% annual interest, the account
will have $5212.02 after 2 yr.
B) About $409.37; if $200 is deposited every 4 wk in an account paying 2.4% annual interest, the account will
have $409.37 after 2 yr.
C) About $6597.68; if $200 is deposited every 4 wk in an account paying 2.4% annual interest, the account
will have $6597.68 after 2 yr.
D) About $5321.79; if $200 is deposited every 4 wk in an account paying 2.4% annual interest, the account
will have $5321.79 after 2 yr.

Evaluate the formula when T = 300 and S = 100. Round to the nearest hundredth.
A) R = 75.00
B) R = 37.50
C) R = 112.50
D) R = 0.01

SHORT ANSWER. Write the word or phrase that best completes each statement or answers the question.
Answer: One method is to simplify the numerator and denominator separately, multiply the numerator by the
reciprocal of the denominator, and simplify the resulting fraction, if possible.

common denominator of the fractions in the numerator and the fractions in the denominator of the
complex fraction, and then simplify the resulting fraction, if possible.

x
Answer: y decreases.
269) State whether the following situation represents direct variation, inverse variation, or neither, and explain why:
The cost of mailing a letter within the United States and the distance that it travels.
Answer: Neither; the cost of mailing a letter within the United States is not affected by the distance that it travels.
270) State whether the following situation represents direct variation, inverse variation, or neither, and explain why:
A runner's speed in a race and the time that it takes to run the race.
Answer: Inverse variation; the greater the speed, the shorter the time.
271) State whether the following situation represents direct variation, inverse variation, or neither, and explain why:

A HALÁL.

Itt ülök vénülő anyám mellett, az apám tizenöt éve porlad a rákosi
földben és én őszülő fejjel, fölnevelt értelemmel visszazárulok a
gyermekhüvelybe, az iszonyat belégyökerez a szőlőbarázdába,
apám régi alakja vergődik előttem s sikolt a gyerekszívem:
– Őlik az apámat.
HORIZONT.
– Az anyám…
az ember az erkélyablakban fölkapta a fejét, gyászoló szemeit a
döbbenet fölgyujtotta, rebbent, kapkodott az esti térségben a
tekintete… alatta a völgyben tömeg morajlott, bolonduló emberek
egymás hegyén-hátán riogtak, vad rendőrök ugró lovaikkal
sikátorokat gázoltak maguk elé a sokaságban, karok, botok a
magasságot vágták, olcsó asszonyi kendők bomoltak, repkedtek a
szélcsöndes levegőben, hörgött a zaj, rikácsolt, kikiszilajodott,
fölföltántorgott a kaoszból a kiáltás:
– Jogot…
– Jogot…
az ember az erkélyablakban a lelkével megölelte magát, a bús
búcsút fölbuzdult kívánsággal tovább gondolgatta, az éltéből
fölkísértő fantomokat szomorkodással megfürkészte, elváló éveit,
eseményeit a könyek rezgésében sajnálgatta, öreg, sokat használt
arcát az igazi formájában meglátta… gyér haját a terülő homloka
fölött a baj csimbókosan kitépdeste, két nagy szemét az orra fölé
csüngősen kitologatta, a keserü íz a szájától a halántékáig az
ijesztgető vonalak ráncait a húsára rávölgyelte, a szégyen, a
nyomorúság a szép arcára a csúfságot rácsunyította, meghalni… a
szorongást a találkozó utcán, az olvasmányos kávéházban, a meleg
orfeumban, mások szemének kérdő, bántó pillantását nem tudni,
alvás előtt a fölrémülő rosszat, gyilkosság? meghalás? elvinné a
számonkérőt? nem érezni, a jeleket, amint átokra hajlik a jóérzés,
gonoszsághoz bőszül a szelidség, gyalázásba rondul az imádság,
felejteni, álló nyugalomban mint a napsütés, elmerülni, meghalni…
ez a szem, amely most lezáródik…: örült a tavasznak, csudálta a
képet, nézte a korzót, követte a folydogáló Dunát, csillant a
gyerekekhez, álmélkodott a csillagokhoz, ez az arc, mely most
átmerevül a maszkba…: melegedett a simulástól, kacagott a
büszkeségtől, szédült a virágbódulattól, keménykedett a bátorságtól,
ez a mell, vállak, derék, ami most átdől a dermedésbe…: borzongott
a nőtől, törte az erdőt, szelte a tengert, ételt, levegőt, nyujtózó
lustálkodást habzsolva maga köré zsákmányolt… sugdosó, nehéz
élet… az ember az erkélyablakban, megkísértett fejében a millió
sejttel, a gyávult távolt karolgatta, nyíló tekintetét völgyben,
magasságban tévelyegve meghordozta… az integető ház egy másik
ablakában kötényes emberek serénykedtek, villámfényben a hosszú
asztalon gipsz- és acéllábak ágaskodtak…
