DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, BMSCE, BANGALORE-19 1

Solids are classified & arranged in to two major groups.
Group A Group B
Solids having top and base of same shape
Solids having base of some shape
and just a point as a top, called apex.
Prisms Pyramids

Visibilty-Visible edges/Boundaries are shown with thick continuous lines, whereas
hidden or invisible edges/Boundaries are shown with thick dashed lines

Rules of visibility
1. All boundary lines in a view are visible
2. No two visible edges cut each other
3. All edges coming out of invisible corner are

invisible Example: Consider frustum of pentagonal

pyramid

1. All boundary lines in a view are visible

AA1,A1B1,B1C1,C1C,CD,DE & EA

2.No two visible edges cut each other

B1,B1 is visible and therefore E1D1 cannot be visible

3.All edges coming out of invisible corner are invisible

E1is invisible corner. Therefore all edges coming out of it i.e E1A,1 E1D1 and E1E are
invisible and are represented by dashed thick lines
DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING, BMSCE, BANGALORE-19 3
Similarly ,D1is invisible corner. Therefore all edges coming out of it i.e D1C,1 ,D1E1
and D1D are invisible and are represented by dashed thick lines
