Case Study: THERMa-PUR®

Style 4122 Spiral Wound Gasket

INDUSTRY:
Refinery

COUNTRY:
China

BACKGROUND:
CCU Piping (700°C @ 2bar/Fume)

CHALLENGES FACED:
The customer was initially using graphite-Asbestos filled spiral
wound gaskets. Accelerated oxidation of graphite occurs at high
temperatures, which leads to very short service life (within 1-2
months) and severe leaks. Flange bolts have to be tightened at
times, and high risk exists.

OPERATING CONDITIONS:
Temperature - 690 – 730°C
Media - High Temperature fume and exhaust
Application - 2 bar
Size (mm/non-standard) –
1) 1042 X 967 X 917 X 897 X 4.5
2) 1358 X 1334 X1284 X 1260 X 4.5
Installation Date - 24 Mar 2014

OBSERVATIONS:
Performance was much better than the previous gasket. There
are no premature failure signs including loosing bolt and
leakage.

VALUE PROPOSITION:
The replacement of graphite with Garlock’s THERMa-PUR®
Style 4122 Spiral Wound Gasket can eliminate these leaks and
oxidation. Safety is an additional major advantage. It is capable
of maintaining its integrity of up to 1000°C (continuous), and it is
oxidation resistant.
